Match Report

Sevenoaks Chronicle, 31st May 1980

A magnificent innings of 111 by Andrew Sims made it possible for Knockers captain Peter Smith to declare at tea with 260 on the board for the loss of just five wickets, and should have been enough to guarantee victory for Knockers against Battle.

However, in the end Knockers were pleased to come away with a tied draw, after their bowling found difficulty in tying the Battle batsmen down on the very small Battle pitch.

The afternoon started off well for Knockers with not just Sims scoring a century in 85 minutes but P. Smith scoring 50 in 55 minutes, then being bowled for 63, chasing runs.

Knockers made an early breakthrough against Battle when their number 2 batsman, J Alexander, was caught off the bowling of Richard Botting.

Knockers were unable to capitalise on the dismissal and was not until the score was on 81 that the next wicket went down.

With five overs to go Battle needed just 15 runs to win, but Botting and Mike Woodman bowled accurately to keep the scoring down so that on the last ball Battle required two runs to win.

They were only able to score one, leaving the game as a scores level draw with both sides ending up 260 for five wickets.
