Match Report

Mayfield is usually a more comfortable place for those Knockers enjoying the impressive pavilion's facilities than those taking to the field. However, a young home side posted a gettable score for our travelling band, most of which Guthrie Miller gobbled up in this 40 over match.

Captain Miller won the toss and elected to bowl, opening with Tom Jenner's smooth action at one end and Richard Calver's controlled seam at the other. Jenner scalped first with glovesman Tom Cobb taking the catch as his six overs went for just under four apiece. Calver did a full stint and waited until the parsimonious Freddie Young partnered him to claim the other Mayfield opener.

Ready Eddie Marsh and Sachin Rawson then took on the middle order. The two combined when Marsh held on to Saker's misjudged shot off Rawson. He would turn out to be Mayfield's top scorer with 31. Marsh bagged two more and with the run rate trickling slowly Knockers were in control. Rawson's spin mastery went on to nick the bails for his second, completing some tidy figures.

Debutant David Cooper-Parry began a fine day's effort taking two Mayfield batsmen that had made a start. His first wicket took the stumps and the second fell into Miller's safe hands. Miller would go on to take two further catches and a wicket as he and Rupert Harbig almost prevented the home team reaching forty overs. With the score at 143-9, the job felt a little more than half done.

A fine tea to compliment the surroundings set Knockers up to chase down the runs. Mayfield, much to their credit, decided to make a go of things with the ball. Harbig shaped up well and mixed stout defence with selective attack. His partner, Cobb, has probably shown more interest in a lecture on early 19th century stamp collections than in his batting, his two runs came as slow as his trudge back to the pavilion.

Lynden Spencer-Allen brought his bat, the Newbery Averagiser, to the crease and found that scoring took some patience. He lost Harbig to a catch and then formed one half of the two key partnerships for Knockers. Miller came to plant his foot at the other end but the pair had to negotiate with an ungenerous bowling attack first. Spencer-Allen was bowled and Simon Rawson followed him with an LBW next to his name on the scorecard.

This roused home support that had previously contented themselves with gentle gibes towards Miller who was playing against his Saturday side. Whether or not teas went further when Guthrie didn't play was not on the skipper's mind as he hit four boundaries in succession and the pair took Knockers past the hundred mark. Wallace had nailed down one end for Mayfield but it was Parker who tempted Miller once too often, eliciting a very smart stumping not long after he had posted his fifty.

Marsh and the now confident Cooper-Parry continued the improved scoring rate. Marsh finished matters with style, pulling for six just into the 29th over and thoughts turned quickly to the bar and conjecture over how this fairly strong Knockers turn out might have faired against Mayfield's Saffers.
