Match Report

Collectively resolute batting, combined pressure to take wickets, sharp wicket keeping and enthusiasm in the field. You haven't stumbled across a random website, this is Knockers we are talking about. We wouldn't let you down on moments of comedy amateurism, but this was an impressive win. Captain Freddie Young led with ball and Toms Speller and Cobb with bat alongside an all-round display by Rex Hugill.

With a reasonable number of Knockers around before the start of play, we started on time. Our club captain Guido wasn't one of those so Sugar stepped up and asked if we might bat first. The request was granted and while the rest of the team absorbed the fine setting of Knole Park, Tom Speller and the Duke opened. Speller was busy at the crease, marking middle stump so enthusiastically that several Time Team presenters started lurking at the side of the field in the hope of further excavating the trench. The Duke, as expected, looked comfortable in the noble surroundings.

Speller sent the ball around well but soon found the on side involved a lot of running with Sennocke's opening pair warming up nicely. CDDP fell first, bowled on nine. Hugill joined Speller and they began a second wicket century partnership. Speller liked working it to leg, while Hugill mixed drives with cuts. The rest of us felt quite relaxed, so quickly settled were the pair. Some Knockers admired the deer or the fine vista, others indulged their fascination for buckets (see photos).

Hugill brought up his half century first and was caught on 62. Cobb joined Speller who reached his fifty and then appeared to run out of steam. He fell when the home side tried bowling at his stumps but was cheered by the news he had finished on 69. Sayem Ahmad was run out pushing for two and Oscar wandered out with Cobb in full flow. Tom soon found out that Oscar was a keen runner and so sought the short boundary more and more to avoid getting lapped. They got us to 245 in our allotted 40 overs and we ambled back to "the dungeon" for tea.

Tea was very good with an extensive selection of treats including cream teas. The sugar consumed lasted the first fifteen overs with clapping, encouraging remarks and athleticism in the field, especially from Sugar and Guido. Andy Roberts had opened along with Harry Elliot and they were as mean and lean a duo as it comes. Roberts struck before Sennocke had registered a run as Young held on at mid-off. He bowled a nagging line just outside off stump, while Harry moved it in time and again as Knockers employed three slips and a gully. Roberts picked up a c&b running around to mid-wicket to claim a skier as Lando, fielding about five yards away, clapped his effort.

First change brought Rex on for Harry and then Young at the other end. Sugar was making it move and hit the timber around the bat before Cobb, who was delighted to be moved all around the field at his captain's whim, held on to for Rex to claim his first. Rex had been quite keen to appeal most things, especially when at first slip and the umpire did all he could to figure out if he could be denied once more before raising the finger on a convincing LBW shout.

Young bowled through, his next wicket a thin edge that Speller pouched with the gloves amid a display of wicket keeping from the top drawer. The Duke bowled an over but was still on Miami time, so Guido had a go for two and combined with Cobb for another wicket before Lando was allowed to bowl. He could have picked his second ever wicket for Knockers had a sleepy long off not been so mesmerised by his double bouncers. Oscar upped the pace and talent after him.

Sennocke had crept back into the game and showed that despite the extensive presence of wildlife - we had five deer fielding at deep extra cover at one stage - they had no bunnies. Westwood, who had bowled superbly, was now finding the boundary with ease and looked to bring them right back in it with the bat. He pushed for a risky second but had taken on Andy Roberts who shied at the stumps straight from his pick up and it found him well short. Young bagged a third and finally ceded back to Roberts after bowling something like 34 overs. Weekes was looking well set for the home team and had a number eleven with him who wasn't about to give it away. Rex capped an excellent day with his third wicket as Cobbler took a third catch at mid-wicket to win the match. A strong performance to head off to tour with.
