Match Report

Knockers made something of a game of it with the ball having posted another low score. This inaugural fixture against Penshurst Park looked like it wouldn't happen at all but the rainclouds departed and the wicket improved, albeit too late for our innings, Guthrie Miller led a late charge with 52 runs. Sachin Rawson was the pick of the bowling, taking all three that we managed to bag in this 25 over match.

Despite having a team of bowlers and a damp wicket, captain Tom Cobb sent his serf, Lando out to do the toss with instructions to bat. He duly lost the toss and Cobbler got his wish anyway. Paul Seldon began proceedings with six off the first two balls. Ten balls later we were still on six as Seb Horner set a heavy price on his wicket. Snellers got nine off the next and Horner batted out another maiden and then they swapped roles as Horner hit two boundaries while Paul found fielders.

It was pretty tough going with the ball initially not coming onto the bat but we were still surprised when Paul played on bringing Cobb to the crease. Perhaps the only solace for Tom from the afternoon is that he is one match closer to getting his hands on a Knockers gold cap. His first contribution was a duck after being bowled by a ball he didn't see. Unfortunately for him the rest of us did, the juicy half-tracker rendering him in two as Hunt picked up two wickets in his first over.

Miller stepped in and up after assessing the track and then tucking in to form the backbone of our innings along with Seb, who was still plugging away running hard for his battling 37. He was bowled soon after surviving a strong LBW appeal and then Miller really did have to run as Sayem Ahmad, ever a keen sprinter between the wickets, got going straight away. Both hit well, but continued the knack of finding fielders, Miller brought up his fifty as his one loose shot was skied and dropped. Ahmad was given LBW following a handy cameo and Simon Rawson squeezed in a boundary and some sharp running to get us to 130.

Tea was good for all except Dan Turner who was dismayed to discover that he is not the tallest man in Kent. A barman in an unnamed Kentish pub has been certified as being a giant and Dan cursed his bad phone signal as he sought confirmation that such a qualification exists.

Rory Goodson led the fightback. One off the first over. DT kept it tight for his first. Four off that over. Then, well, it started to get away from us early on. Goodson's striped luminous socks ceased distracting the batsmen and he gave way to Sachin. He immediately made an impact, bowling their opener, Lyddon. Turner bowled a loose fourth and was swapped for Simon Rawson but the father-son combo was only allowed a brief stay as Cobb then bowled in tandem with Sachin.

The pair bowled us back into contention. Sachin bagged two with Jonty Mitchell catching at square-leg which was followed up in the same over by an LBW. It was just reward for some finely tuned variation of spin that countered a wicket with little bite. Cobb sent down our only maiden and was holding down an end when a top edge that went a long way up came back down to him looking well set and then it spilled to the floor and Penshurst never looked back.

Loring, after a slow start was now motoring. His fifty came and went and he seemed to come to relish being the main man as extras almost top scored after him. Sayem's first two were tight but a switch to round the wicket didn't pay off while Miller tied down his end until Loring got the final two needed and his 87th run in the 24th over. It wasn't really in doubt, but we made them work for it. The Larkins was good in the Leicester Arms with a good turn out from both teams.
