Match Report

A large swing back to good form for Knockers with a convincing win at Linton Park. Ollie Marsh marked his return to the club with a wicket from his first ball and took four in total in a superb partnership with Matt Watts. Christian Kutner kept the momentum up with three wickets as our hosts' innings ended on 100. Paul Seldon and Lynden Spencer-Allen then saw us comfortably home in this 40 over match.

Captain LSA lost the toss and we were sent out to bowl. Matt Watts went for five off his first over and then pinned down his end in a fine example of controlled seam bowling. His next three overs played out as maiden, wicket-maiden, maiden. Ollie Marsh, back from his wandering years, sent down a low full-toss for his first ball and it hit the off-stump. Three balls later he'd found his length and sent the bails flying for a second wicket. Watts then sent down his first maiden before Ollie teased an edge out of the remaining opener to Snellers at first slip. Down it went but heads didn't and Marsh got another edge and things went a bit seventies. James Mitchell, fielding at second slip, dived slowly to his right, so slowly that a large "R" flashed in the sky a la TV action replays from World Cup Mexico 1970, this allowed us to enjoy his peachy one-handed catch.

Watts kept it tight, nearly finding the edge from numerous balls as no further further runs came from his hands. He picked up his wicket on a classic length ball seaming to off stump. When the pair had finished their combed eight overs, Linton Park were four wickets down with eight on the board.

James Thompson and Christian Kutner bowled first change and continued the fine work. Thompson, fresh in from the beach at Bail that morning, took time to find his rhythm and when he took pace off the ball as his spell went on became hard to get away, his last two overs adding to the growing list of maidens. At the other end, Kutner put in his best spell for the club. He bowled the well set Knowler and Welshman who had worked hard to form the host's best partnership. CK matched his bowling partner's growing control but with scalps, taking a wicket in each of his last three overs, all bowled and all merited.

Sayem Ahmad then came on with debutant Joe Flannery. Ahmad chose spin today and kept up the pressure while Flannery's nervous start gave way to joy as Seldon scooped up another one- handed catch just above the deck at slip to mark the debut with a wicket. Flannery gave way to Marsh who split the stumps again to end with very healthy figures of 5-1-4-4. The innings finished with another highlight as Ahmad picked up his wicket. With a catch? No! Bowling his man out? No! It was an LSA stumping! Sharp work from the skipper.

Tea was very good and although Tom Cobb had decided not to show up, his ex-girlfriend Roger did. Rubbish in bed, bad-breath, penchant for wearing her knickers, all things Cobb could have denied had he been there but alas we had to accept these things as truth.

Snellers opened with Mitchell and they got us off to a sound start before Mitch was well caught at deep mid-wicket. The Seldon/Landers partnership was predictably brief but Lynden made a better fist of things and hard running - it's a large ground at Linton - and the occasional boundary brought the total up steadily with few scares. Snellers carried his bat just shy of his fifty as LSA ran the two needed in the 22nd over to bring season victories into double figures for the first time in a while. Well played.
