Match Report

One struggles to remember the last time a fixture threatened by rain that went ahead and resulted in a Knockers win. Optimism for a decent effort at the start of the day faded in the field and Staplehurst, who proved great hosts, completed a routine win with the ball. A half-century for LSA in a century partnership with Sachin, who batted aggressively for 35, was one of the few saving graces of the day.

Captain Scott Landers lost the toss in a fixture reduced to 25 overs. We were sent out with the ball and two Staplehurst men, graciously loaned to bring us up to ten. Harry opened and initially struggled to bowl the right line to the right-hander but soon sent one through the gate and we were underway as our ninth and final man of the eleven we were expecting turned up. Kutner mixed it up at the other end but Watts and McConnell soon settled.

Horner and Rawson then had a go and produced chances, every one of which we dropped. Seb took it upon himself to do it, bowling McConnell, who had just passed 50. Staplehurst built another partnership with Watts and Hensen and it started racing away from us until debutant Watson finally got Watts on 68. Henson went on to his fifty as Knockers started getting wickets. Mitchell took two in two before Henson dismissed his hat-trick ball for six over deep square leg. John's first went to the hands of the remaining Staplehurst loan, his second, a quiet LBW appeal, was even questioned by his teammates - the two sounds turned out to be two pads. Watson then bagged another through a catch - yep, the Staplehurst man showing us how it is done once again and the 25 overs ended with the hosts on 216.

Tea was put aside until the end so we immediately set about the chase with Horner and Watson. Two overs later both were back in the hutch. Horner lost his leg stump and Watson played on. Still, we had Snellers and LSA, so maybe we could still do this. Seldon hit two boundaries and was at the non-strikers end when the call came: "Yes!" then the call "Wait!" as he was halfway down the track and finally "No!" as the ball directly hit his stumps from 25 yards. 14-3.

The Sachin and Lynden show then got underway and beefy blows from both, a straight smash for six from LSA and several pulls from Sach being highlights, and they brought the required run rate to within something approaching a possibility until Rawson fell, bowled and we had no further batsmen and not a lot of those either with our club captain deciding soccer was more important on the day (boozy, annoyed missive duly dispatched later that evening). Harry put up a fight, his 19 included some heaving drives but then we lost Lynden and soon after Elliot, both bowled. Mitchell blocked, Kutner didn't and Landers watched on as John's patience quickly ran out. A lacklustre end to what was after all a fine summer. Winter well ye Knockers.
