Match Report

And to think it all started off so promisingly.
Darry once more losing the toss forced Knockers into the field
much to the delight of all the members of the team who could
still not remember what they did the night before. A fairly brisk opening spell by L. Spencer-Allen (9-2-26) aided by P.Seldon (8-1-41) gave the game some impetus. When Seldon struck in the 6th over the score was on 27 and things started to look up. Sheldwich's star batsman entered to be swiftly removed from the ground along with his off stump by a good ball from Spencer-Allen. Things were improving by the minute. Seldon was taken off and Jariwalla was on to bowl. Having the shock of bowling a wide first ball, he quickly salvaged his return to the team by a succesion of brilliant overs returning 7-2-19. The figures not telling the whole story with a couple of chances being missed, notably Darry having some problems holding onto a skied ball. Rumary came on at
the other end and amidst some erratic bowling produced the odd 'peach' returning figures of 3-1-15. Darry had a brief spell too before being replaced by the dominant Trounce. The Knockers secret weapon was unleashed on the opposition and quickly took effect finishing off the opposition with 3-25 off 4.5overs. Sheldwich ended on 148 all out. The fielding performance being fairly pleasing.

A hearty tea was followed by the reality that batting was next. It suddenly became apparent how little time anyone had spent at the crease as a quick succession of wickets fell. After 9 overs the score was on 24-5 and the hope of winning was quickly slipping. A brief but eloquent knock by debutant Charlie Irwin was enjoyed by all including a straight six that
took everyone by surprise. the glory was shortlived however as he was soon in the pavillion again. P.Seldon also provided some respite from the deluge of wickets making 18 vefore falling to an impossible ball to play. It all fell down to S.Trounce and A. Darry to provide some last fleeting moments of hope, Darry striking two fours, one cunningly edged past the keeper and the other a full blooded forehand cross field shot developed from a new right handed stance(with only one arm!). Trounce also struck a four behind square on the leg before Darry was bowled to end the game. All out 67. The mood was somber as it became evident that we were completely humiliated once more by Sheldwich in a game that we should have won. Let's try better next year then.
