Holmesdale
171-10
Knockers
175-5
Knockers CC maintained their impressive 9 game unbeaten streak with a solid performance against local rivals Holmesdale. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first on a good looking track. However, Holmesdale did not get off to the desired start losing a wicket in the very first over. Lynden Spencer-Allen continued to wreak havoc bowling three batsmen in his four over spell. At the other end Paul Seldon was doing similar damage taking two wickets in two balls with big inswingers but unfortunately failing to complete the hat trick. The ball following the hat-trick ball did however find the edge but Pete Smith could only get a now bruised wrist to the ball.
Holmesdale were on the ropes at 34 for 6 but an accomplished 103 not out by D Whitehead, ably supported by Recaldin, provided Dale with some stability. Timely bowling changers by Skipper Matthew Wood brought the spinners into the fray and Jariwalla soon picked up a wicket with a well flighted delivery. Jazza could have had a second wicket if it wasn't for a shameless piece of umpiring by an unremoreseful Ken Cowan. The Knockers players contemplated a ritual burning of Kenny's Knockers jumper after the game but luckily for Ken smiles were soon back on their faces thanks to the skipper. Woody refocused the attentions of his troops by picking up the wickets of Recladin caught at slip by Pete Smith and Andrew Alabaster the victim of an unusually athletic diving catch by Steve Trounce. Brett Hillary and Matt Topliss attempted to add some late impetus but Hillary was soon picked up caught behind off the bowling of Edward Irwin whilst Corin Spencer-Allen wrapped up the first innings by taking the wicket of Topliss thanks to a good catch by Paul Seldon. Holmesdale's total of 171, largely thanks to the unbeaten innings of Whitehead, was well within reach.
In response, Knockers got off to a great start thanks to a vast array of strokes by Woody (22) who swept an drove Holmesdale's star bowler in to an early submission. Stuart Seldon (44) started slowly but when Topliss caught Wood in the covers he was forced to open out. A 70 run partnership with Charlie Irwin gave Knockers a solid platform. Charlie Irwin's innings of 31 was a brilliant blend of flashing drives on both sides of the wicket before a thick top edge looped to Hillary at gully. Paul Seldon began playing his strokes immediately but a breakdown in communications with brother Stuart led to Paul being run out. Holmesdale were beginning to look alive again having picked up the key wicket of Stuart Seldon and then wickets started to tumble, Knockers slipping from 124 for 2 to 127 for 5 in the space of four overs. However, Edward Irwin (29 not out) and Lynden Spencer-Allen (14 not out) steadied the ship. Both players finishing the job in fine style with clinical stroke play. Knockers finished on 175 for 5 to claim their sixth win in eight matches.
