Match Report

Knockers batted first on a damp wicket and Stuart Seldon and Edward Irwin got the visitors off to a good start with a mixture of good running and well struck boundaries. E. Irwin (18) however nicked an away swinger from ex-Knocker Nigel Cannon and the first wicket went down. Charlie Irwin came to the crease and before long the boundaries began to flow. Stuart Seldon’s solid innings of 28 came to an abrupt end when his defences were breached by a yorker from Boxell. A sprightly Peter Smith (38) joined the impressive C Irwin and enjoyed a 95 run third wicket partnership to put Knockers in a commanding position at 180 for 3 after Smith was out playing on. Smith was more than happy though as he had slapped his old friend Nigel Cannon for a few boundaries. Paul Schofield (13 not out) provided excellent support to Charlie Irwin who stole the show with a brilliant array of cricket strokes, finishing the innings with one of the highest ever scores by a Knockers player on a magnificent 139 not out. The Knockers total of 261 for 3 looked ominous.

Andy Darry and Guthrie Miller opened the bowling for Knockers and both found it tough as Singer Snr and Singer Jnr looked to attack early on. Singer Jnr was especially aggressive reaching a very quick 50 with some powerful strokes. Several times Miller and Darry were despatched in to the undergrowth much to their amusement. Having failed to make a break through and with the Hatch looking well positioned at 102 for 0 the Knockers captain Nick Jariwalla was beginning to break in to a nervous sweat. In desperation Woowar looked to senior bowlers Lynden Spencer-Allen and Paul Seldon for a wicket. L Spencer-Allen (3-36) duly obliged getting Singer Snr caught in the deep by Jariwalla in his third over. P Seldon (4-23) then also rose to the challenge and removed Singer Jnr caught behind by Charlie ‘Dravid’ Irwin. L Spencer-Allen and P Seldon continued to make inroads both desperately trying to get ahead in the leading wicket taker of the season stakes. Their competition spurred them both on and the Hatch soon found themselves 6 wickets down for the addition of only nine runs. The spin twins Jariwalla and Wood came on steal some cheap wickets at the end. It is always a surprise when the captain brings himself on to bowl at the tail. There weren’t any hard feelings though as both had made a great contribution by taking three catches each. Having taken wickets 8 and 9 Woody unselfishly left the prize wicket of Nigel Cannon for the skipper who fittingly sealed another win for Knockers. Colemans Hatch finished well short at 155 all out stretching the Knockers unbeaten run to nine games.
