Match Report

Two wins in two for Knockers as Paul Seldon carried his bat in an imperious innings of 122no. Ed Springett continued his fine start to the season with 72 as the opening pair put on 175. A side of fresh faces had earlier kept a grip on matters in the field with contributions from all involved.

Sissinghurst, kindly loaning us one player to get us to ten, surprised Knockers captain Scott Landers with a request for a timed game. With five new faces, he was unsure what might become of the game but agreed, lost the toss and was asked to field. With only two recognised batsman, this came as a relief. Springett opened the bowling with Finn Kinsler O'Sullivan at the other end. Ed got it swinging early and throughout his seven over spell was missing the edge on a regular basis. He bowled their opener, Winner, who nicked onto his leg stump. Finn kept it tight at the other end and the pair set the tone for a great effort in the field.

FKO gave way to Christian Kutner who produced a top edge from Freeman to Springett at fine leg to break a developing partnership. Kutner was followed by Tom Woodthorpe who got the SCC skipper caught and bowled in a testing spell. Springett handed over to Gus Sears and, there are several witnesses to this, Lando took a catch at slip off his tidy bowling. Sears could have bagged two more but for some difficult missed chances.

The scoreboard was ticking over slowly with the miserly bowling backed up by sharp work in the field, especially by Michael Woodthorpe patrolling the square to mid wicket area. His brother, Tom Woodthorpe took a second wicket as our loanee, Buckingham held on. All the while though Easton was building an innings, eventually getting an unbeaten 50, and in E. Freeman, a Kent under 15s player, he found a partner that looked to stretch the field. Kutner returned and got tighter and tighter but with no breakthrough and Finn tried again from the other end, found his rhythm but not the break though he deserved. Sayem Ahmad stepped in and got Freemen bowled as he charged past the spinner's third ball. The Woodthorpes began to bowl in tandem when the declaration came.

Sissinghurst's teas quite rightly have a fine reputation and this was no exception. Returning to the game proved a little difficult for Knockers, so good were the cakes.

Having been informed that we only had two batsmen, Sissinghurst began with enthusiasm only for Snellers to produce a cover drive off the first ball for four and those very two batsmen going on to take us to twenty shy of the home team's total. This was Seldon in vintage form as he found boundary after boundary against good bowling. SCC had their fair share of youth in their side but none that needed to hide such was the standard on display. Springett and Seldon were just right on the money time and again, Seldon the aggressor built on Springett's sound temperament and technique as the latter picked off any loose balls that came his way.

Seldon hit two almighty sixes sixes over the sight screen but it was possibly his thunderous stroke over the pavilion that sticks in the memory the most. The pair just batted and batted and were a joy to watch. Ed's knock finally came to end to a smart catch at second slip. Buckingham was bowled and Michael Woodthorpe faced one ball as Snellers hit four boundaries off the next over to win the game inside 25 overs. Cracking cricket.
