Match Report

A valiant Knockers side recorded a convincing victory against Shoreham, despite the surprise shortage of players. Guy Howe, like the postal service, a no-show on Sundays. However, regardless of this short-coming, it will be a day long remembered in the history of the club, due to the superb match winning 171-run partnership of Scott Landers and Lynden Spencer-Allen, with the former reaching an unbeaten half century, and the latter, an unbeaten century.

With the shocking no-show of Club Captain Guy Howe, Lynden Spencer-Allen took the reigns, winning the toss and choosing to field in the wet outfield. The ball was tossed to Ollie Marsh and Sayem Ahmad to open the bowling. After several overs of Ollie’s explosive pace and Sayem’s deadly accuracy, the first wicket fell to Marsh, knocking the bails off convincingly. Maidens followed, before Marsh struck again, leaving the opposition 33-2 from 9 overs.

Despite the brilliant start from the Knockers, Shoreham steadied the ship, with their batsmen forming a strong third wicket partnership, Setterfield surviving a vociferous appeal caught behind that was actually dropped and Haysler, who hit a superb 93. That being said, all credit can’t be awarded to the batsmen, as an ever supportive Knockers side did help them along with a plethora of dropped chances, despite the best efforts of Finn O’Sullivan and Christian Kutner’s tidy performances with the ball. John Mitchell came close, almost taking an impressive caught and bowled, and James Thompson bowled a short but sweet spell at the other end. With Shoreham well poised, Lynden put his faith in ‘The Duke’ and Marsh to close out the overs, with Marsh bowling the key man, Haysler and Duke picking up two quick wickets thanks to some tidy work from Lynden behind the stumps, and a confused batsmen, whose dancing feet really should have been left at the nightclub.

Shoreham left the field 202-5, leaving Knockers in a good position at tea. The tea was of the highest quality, leaving a very satisfied Paul Seldon and co ready to witness the seismic event that was Scott Landers’ batting masterclass.

After tea, a rejuvenated Knockers looked to chase down the reasonable 202 set by Shoreham. Lynden sent James Thompson and Scott Landers to open the batting. JT fell early from a good delivery and Snellers fell a short while after on a decent looking 13 to a tidy low slip catch. This lead to the beautiful meeting of Lynden and Scott in the middle. Scott was already impressing with several beautiful cover drives, leading us to believe the hours of work in the winter nets really paid off. The sounds of Depeche Mode’s “I just can’t get enough” was ringing in our ears, as everyone couldn’t turn their eyes off Scott’s transformation into a batting wizard. LSA and Scott continued piling on the runs, scoring freely across several overs.

The game still was in the balance, with the over count slowly falling. Several Knockers began to get the nerves in the pavilion, but super-skipper LSA eased the tension, with an impressive over, consisting of three 6’s and a 4. This lessened the pressure and allowed himself to push on to a wonderful 117* and Scott to push to personal best 67*, despite the nervous tears of his son in the crowd.

In the end LSA and Scott eased over the finish line, leaving Knockers victors by eight wickets in this well contested game. The batsmen savored the applause walking back to the pavilion, with Scott now considering retirement after this career best achievement.
