Match Report

A Knockers side made up of legends and those in the making saved the fun for the bar afterwards as a somewhat flat performance on the field handed victory to nine-man Sennocke. There were highlights in the return of our errant captain, Ed's continued appetite for runs, Freddie's bowling and Snellers' glovework in this 35 over match.

Guido won the toss and elected to bat, sending himself and his protege, the Duke in. The pair got us off to a solid start as fellow Knockers busied themselves in announcing whether they were born before Guy Howe's bat made its debut or after. The run rate was hardly explosive, but Guido - a man whose evident genius has never been shackled by the need for form - did somehow turn a half tracker into a tornado of a hook shot. Alas the momentum put him firmly on his bottom and only a single as reward. He fell after the first change as Clayton took the first of his four victims with 51 on the board.

Ed Springett joined the Duke and the pair navigated some distinctly choppy waters before settling down. It was hard work picking up length in the open surroundings but after CDDP was caught our hopes were high of another Springett and Seldon partnership. Those hopes lasted too short a time as Snellers was bowled and replaced by Ahmad. Sayem edged his top score for the club up by a couple of runs until given out LBW by a rather officious umpire. Sayem's pull through long leg was the pick of his three boundaries.

Freddie looked in good nick as Ed plugged away, anchoring our low-scoring innings. Young nicked to the keeper, Calver played around one and Springett himself was caught. Knowles hung around, lost Kuts to a catch before getting bowled leaving Gerald stranded without facing a ball. The ten men finishing on 162 with about three balls remaining.

Tea was consumed in the dungeon of Knole House and despite the low score, we felt we had a bowling side and with the oppo already two down we were still in the game.

Perhaps we were grateful to our hosts for our release from the subterranean as Knockers' bowling was quite generous almost throughout Sennocke's response. Kuts' variations were in evidence and Calver came and went in one over leaving Sayem to try a build a bowling partnership. Kuts struck, getting an outside edge which Snellers took smartly but the run rate was in excess of Knockers' earlier efforts. Knoles and Young then began a period of bowling that almost turned the game back in our favour. Young was the pick of the bowlers on the day and his seven overs caused all sorts of problems as many Sennocke batsmen had trouble picking him. Young removed the remaining opener, Callighan just shy of his half century after Knoles could have had him twice. Had Ed's run and diving one handed catch over his shoulder stuck it would have gone down as one of the best.

Knoles did get reward for his work as Seldon took another of his four catches with the gloves (Lynden's batting was still missed nonetheless). Springett helped turn the screw as Freddie continued and wickets fell to both and Sennocke's hutch became nervous as Knockers finally showed intent. That moment came and went with the hosts' last pairing seeing off the tension to reach the target comfortably. A good game in good company.

The bar offered something of a warm up for tour. Potential venues discussed, accommodation plans mocked and then Guido answering a question with a random seemingly prepared speech about a conquest in the US, where he won the fair maiden's heart by reciting the entire 50 states in under three minutes, a period of time she most likely became intimately familiar with. It took him fifteen minutes to jot them down this time around with no volunteers to reward him. Onto Oxford men.
