Match Report

A strong Knockers side, despite their fatigue from the two nights out prior, recorded a victory in their final game of the 2016 tour, with an all-round team performance in this timed match.

Captain Freddie Young lost the toss and Knockers where put into the field to the dismay of Kuts who desperately needed an advil and a sleep, and not 40-odd overs in the beating sun. But the team, as they had done all tour, entered the pitch with confidence. New recruit Charlie Hawksworth and Hector Agnew opened the bowling with pace and bounce, terrorizing the batsmen at the crease. In the 4th over, Hector got his man, trapped in front of his wicket. A swift finger saw the back of their opening batsman.

Their captain was by now displaying signs of quick-single Tourette’s syndrome – ‘I could have walked that’ came the cry as the ball found its way to several close fielders when Usain Bolt would have had trouble making his ground. He was not the most sprightly of figures and Kuts, enjoying his new found role of team sledger (as well as filthy slow bowler) suggested that one ball that came straight to him at silly mid-on was an easy single. ‘Don’t you tell me that! I know, I know!’ came the response, much to everyone’s delight.

More tight bowling from Calver, Young and especially Springett, who sent down six overs for only nine runs, ensued, keeping the Bledlow score to a minimum. It was Kutner (3-37) and the Duke (4-5) who cleaned up the lower order with seven tidy wickets between them, featuring some incredible catches in the field and some serious ground covered by Ed Agnew, Hector’s athletic brother. One chap appeared to twice question whether he was out having paddled the ball gently in the air to short mid-wicket. The Duke just missed out on a hat trick when the entire Knockers field surrounded the very-young batsman only for no-one to move for the gentle push in the air back down the wicket. He got him next ball as the eleventh man played-on to his stumps.

This left Bledlow at 174 all out at the end of their innings.

After a lovely tea and a quick trip to the station to send Captain Young back to Edinburgh, Knockers began the chase, sending in Tom Johansen (TJ) and Hector. Some fantastic cricket followed; with TJ hitting the bowlers all around the park with some notably eccentric shots. Hector Agnew did the same, but fell on 18 to a good delivery.

Hawskworth and Justin entered at 3 and 4 respectively but both fell quickly. The Duke came in at 5, hoping to close the game with TJ, but TJ played one too many reverse sweeps and fell LBW on 74. This allowed Kuts to have a long overdue bat, but two balls of him swinging big, left him caught deep in the field. The incorruptible Ed Springett, highly confident, met The Duke at the crease and between them conjured a solid sixty-odd partnership to end the game comfortably.

The team sat around post game, drinks in hand, reminiscing on a good tour, basking in the light of victory. However Calver‘s reminiscing was more flamboyant than the rest……
