Match Report

Proper cricket at Oxford Downs saw us lose with two overs to spare as the home team chased down our total in this timed game. Sayem and Ed’s tight bowling made them work hard for their win while Lynden, TJ and Lando contributed heavily towards our total. Guido’s three hour journey to the match was rewarded by a golden duck.

Ed and Freddie opened our batting following a gold cap presentation for Scott. The Downs’ opening pair combined pace at one end with accurate swing at the other. The pace did for Ed after a decent start which was followed by Freddie falling for swing, after batting for ten overs for his four runs. Oh, I nearly forgot, Guido batted too! He got a horrible first ball that seamed sharply away to off stump. The mirth of his fellow Knockers helped soften the blow of his epic journey to the crease and quick return form it. This brought Lynden and Scott together again, a partnership which previously saw them put up an unbeaten 171.

The pair benefited from a fairly quick bowling change which brought the pace down but not the accuracy. Oxford Downs’ maidens were adding up in the heat but bad balls were despatched despite the hosts' ring fielding being of the highest order. Lando was caught and bowled just shy of another century partnership.

TJ then came in and upped the run rate with Lynden who with each run brought increasing levels of self-disgust from the chap at slip that dropped him. Lynden went onto a fine 83 before getting stumped when a ton looked on the cards. Hector began a proper Knockers’ debut getting bowled early on as the Duke looked in great nick to help the busy TJ take us past 200 and to a declaration.

What a tea. A spread our battle hardened travellers took to with relish (tea photo available). We were in the game with a full team, TJ was keeping and spirits were high once more.

Calver opened and sent down an increasingly confident variation of balls. He took first blood as Lynden ran from slip to bag a top edge. Hector nailed down the other end with every other over a maiden from his testing swing. Lando hobbled off with a torn calf, but we even had a sub as Gerald brought his knee-based fielding to the mix.

Sayem and the Duke went on first change. Sayem bowled a man and the Duke bagged two with Guido holding on at deep and Calver’s grabbing a fierce pull. They needed 100 from the last twenty, we still had Freddie and Ed up our sleeve.

Both grabbed a wicket but by now our catching deserted us. Watts, who had dropped Lynden early on made a mends as he blasted Oxford Downs towards their target, getting dropped twice by Hector (a born Knocker). Sayem came back on but it was too much to ask to keep the aggressive Watts quiet and they got home with just over two overs to spare.
