Match Report

A strong looking Knockers team couldn't produce enough with the bat in this enjoyable first fixture at Chiddingstone's lovely ground. Sachin Rawson's maiden half century made it more respectable and Ollie Marsh's excellent five fer showed we had enough to give them a better game on a different day, but it was a visit from club president, Keith Miller that proved the highlight of this timed game.

Captain Lynden Spencer-Allen won the toss and put us in, opening with Paul Seldon and debutant William Head. After a week of rain, the uncovered track was doing plenty and Chid's opening pair of Hanwell, who was getting good away swing and Allwood, with a slingshot arm, pinned us down. Head fell first having looked in good shape, playing around a full toss following a boundary.

Marsh stepped in, survived a strong LBW shout and then hit out as we looked to recover. He then decided to call for a quick single. Snellers considered the call, figured there must be something Ollie knew that he didn't, and then set off. He continued the jaunty stroll all the way back to the pavilion. LSA joined Marsh who then watched his middle stump fall over. Guido's cameo involved his usual display of a single stout forward defence and with that out of the way joined what was to become a long list of those bowled. He later had tea and then buggered off leaving Gerald to take his place in the field. A club fine was agreed in the dressing room in his absence.

Paul Taylor fell, Lynden chased a wide one straight to gully and Kuts was also caught. Phil Barnet, the Chidingstone skipper, looked at the scoreboard (59-7) and took off his opening pair. Sachin made hay but by this stage the sun wasn't shining. He and Harry Elliott put on 55 for the eighth wicket to spare Knockers' blushes, Harry's straight drives chipping in between Sachin working the field. Harry fell and Simon Rawson joined his son. Sachin brought up his fifty with a fine pull shot as the pair put on 45 for the ninth wicket, the second highest in Knockers history for that wicket. Allwood returned and did for Sachin as Lando, having played a world-class two balls for nought could only watch Simon get bowled in the indicated final over. 159-10, could've been worse but should have been better.

Tea was very good. Andy Darry, Guthrie Miller and Keith Miller on his first Knockers outing since health threw him a googly as well as Sir Les Seldon floated around enjoying the available fares before leaving us to our fate.

It was not so clear cut. Marsh sent down an initial over that meant business. Elliott joined in the fun at the other end and the home side knew they were in for a game. One CCC batsmen was edging closer to the square leg umpire so unsettling was Marsh's pace. He eventually nicked to LSA with the gloves and Ollie could have had his opening partner but for the third time this season the stumps were struck and the bails refused to budge. That opener was A. Cooper and he was the only CCC man to get into double figures, asides from someone called Extras.

McBrearty replaced Elliott, kept them guessing and then got Cooper to send one down the throat of mid on. Mid on duly coughed and dropped and it was our last good chance to see Cooper off. Marsh was making them sweat however, quite an achievement on what was by now a distinctly chilly day. William took a blinder at third slip, bending backwards to hold on. Lynden took another nick and Marsh got two two more, returning the middle stump favour to Hanwell for one and a well backed LBW appeal for the other as his five-fer was deserved reward for eight overs of pace and control.

Taylor was mixing it up, having replaced McBrearty, he got a couple past the edge but still the breakthrough wouldn't come. Kuts tried from the other end as Marsh gave way but loose shots didn't find hands and it took Sachin to complete a fine day's efforts as his four overs went only for eight runs with one Chid man bowled and finally bringing Cooper down for 93 when his dad snaffled a skier at point.

It was alas, too late. Chidingstone got the final runs needed under persistent drizzle with six overs to spare. It is hoped this might be the first of many visits to this fine club.
