Match Report

A 12-man Knockers team overcame Shoreham to extend their winning streak to six games.

Skipper Ollie Marsh lost the toss and the Knockers were put in for a bat. The team organised a guard of honour for the ever-modest Guy Howe to walk through on his 100th cap. He led the squad out with fellow opener Ed Marsh. Some accurate bowling on a fluffy surface caused early problems, but the pair started to ease their way in. Ed was the first to fall on a solid 24. Guy Howe too fell, bowled by a slower ball for 31. Tom Cobb followed, seeing the team through a tricky period, posting a respectable 31. With the Duke caught on 1, a duck from Lynden and short stays for Moen and Anton O’Sullivan, the Knockers were in need of a partnership. Guido had seen enough and quickly got back in his suit and left on a promise, leaving Finn to take his place later on. He did, however, kiss every member of the team on the way out. Nice touch.

The ‘Lion Incarnate’ Christian Kutner, fresh with his new mane went off to buy out all of the bottled beer at the local pub, much to the dismay of the owner. He luckily kept one back for Ollie Marsh before he had to enter the fray. Ollie downed his Corona and went out there to impress his ‘lovely’ (Guido’s words) girlfriend. Marsh quickly found his feet blazing balls over the boundary. He formed the needed partnership of 84 runs with 'do-no-wrong' John Mitchell, who delivered a performance worthy of an England call-up. Marsh ended on 80, his highest ever innings in any form of cricket and an impressive knock on a tricky track. John Mitchell was run out (Ollie farming the strike) on his own personal best of 20.

This left Knockers on 240 to defend after tea. A lovely spread was devoured, and the Knockers were back in the field to defend their respectable total.

A fine opening bowling display from Louis Moen (2-12) and Christian Kutner (2-13) got the Knockers off to a great start. Both bowlers steaming in, swinging the ball with ease as Knockers crowded the batsmen. Shoreham sat at 10 for 4 after ten overs, with two wickets each for the bowlers. Ollie Marsh (showing off in front of the girlfriend) decided to bowl some spin, forming a small partnership with the Duke at the other end. Ollie Marsh didn’t do much with the ball (0-15). Lib looked on. The Duke picked up two, but was left fuming after two drops and a bizarre lbw decision prevented him a more rewarding spell but still well ahead of his cheaper contemporary, Freddie Young for the season. Some lovely late bowling from Mitchell (2-22) and Anton O’Sullivan who was allowed to bowl properly (unlike Finn’s new skills of spin) cleaned up Shoreham quickly.

The key to success today however must be the fielding. Four catches by Finn O’Sullivan, which Kutner attributed to him having ‘sticky fingers’. He added that Finn should get a girlfriend to prevent this in the future. There was also a one handed catch at slip by the Duke (despite a no ball being called). The only man who didn’t have sticky fingers today was Tom Cobb who dropped a sitting duck in the cordon.

Overall it was a lovely game, with John Mitchell leading like a true Knocker in all aspects of the match. Even Pete Smith managed to come down today! After a few drinks several Knockers retreated for a lovely curry after. A great end to a great match.
