Match Report

A strong Knockers side came up against a good Eridge side on a wicket that had plenty in it for the spinners but was not hard enough for any short stuff for the quicks. The outfield was very slow and left some batsman needing a breather after plenty of 2s and 3s.

Knockers went out to bat first with openers Ed Springett and Seb Horner, Ed unfortunately was caught by the bowler after a leading edge and was back in the shed pretty sharpish. This brought Cobb to the crease which saw a great partnership and a brilliant base to attack from in the latter overs. Seb fell for a well crafted 29 with some lovely strokes and clear running, so Ben Ferrao entered the scene in quite an interesting style. Wide brimmed hat donned and armed with one of Alex Hales' old bats he looked the business but unfortunately after looking in good nick was caught by a backwards diving over-the-shoulder catch and looked shocked at the athleticism shown by the opposition's captain. Tim Walker then scratched around at the start of a very useful not out innings in which he saw Matt Rivers, E. Marsh, O. Marsh and John Mitchell (Flintoff) all come and go after some big shots and finally ended up making a very useful partnership with Kuts who hit 11 all round the park. Kuts eventually got given LBW and quite comically didn't see the umpire give him out and looked like he was standing his ground or reviewing the decision. Will then had a quick supporting role to Walker as he made his 50 in style hitting some tasty 6s and the innings ended with Knockers getting a very useful 187 given the home team's bowling efforts.

Teas were well received and the bar was in full swing and after the food we decided to throw a nerf ball around to warm up which gave us all a lift in the feild as everyone was on top form!

'He must have been mid-70s at least' reads the Eridge match report in response to the skipper's bowling who, in typically respectful fashion, opted to have just two men in front of square for his opening spell as he returned figures of 5-1 off his 5. Not a bad platform combined with Kuts' nibbling efforts coming up the slope which warranted a few scalps but some strong stroke play left the opposition on 38 off the opening ten. W Pierce took pity on their run rate by offering a few tactical leaves in the field and a few hoists from their dangermen looked to inject some pace into proceedings but the pressure was quelled by collectively accurate bowling from everyone present as the give everyone a go ethos worked a dream with every Knocker having a notable say. Highlights include Horner's nutmegging of their 7, Walker's teasing of their dangerous-looking Canadian, Flintoff's ever elusive straight ball and Pierce's remarkable change of form in a very tight bowling spell.

Save for a late drop in the deep from É Marsh and Cobb's dollies there were few mistakes of note as committed fielding and consistent hitting of the mark from a very strong bowling lineup made for a well-contested yet comfortable victory just in time to beat the worst of the evening rain. Another enjoyable Sunday in a splendid setting as we move onto 8inarow. Penshurst up next. Whispers...
