Match Report

Knockers returned to winning ways in the welcome return of Ightham to the fixture card. Snellers underpinned the batting with David Bowen and Matt Landers pushing them on before the Duke and Landers show began.

Despite two previous miserable team returns with the bat, captain Ollie Marsh stuck to his guns and sent out Snellers and Guido, the latter's appearance putting several local bookies out of business. The pair settled in the face of some accurate Ightham bowling putting on fifty until Seldon fell to a lifter on an occasionally lively wicket.

With Howe's jaunty stint over and Springett not far behind it brought together Ziggy (Bowen) and Matt who set about increasing the run rate, a Landers straight six being a highlight before holing out while Bowen built his innings with some lovely legside shots and hard running, going on to form a second partnership together with a nice knock from under-pressure JT. 175-4 at tea.

Knockers' tea chat had a mild melancholy that matched the overcast conditions but it was broken by the news that three generations of Marshes were present (Gramdma Marsh later heckling Ollie to pitch it up) and Duke's family and girlfriend were also watching. The future Mrs Duke maintained composure as a chatty man in kit last washed before she was born gave her some spin ahead of an expected turn with the ball.

Guido's tweaks were not needed in the end. Sayem opened with Kuts and the pair pinned down the Ightham openers with Kuts in fine form, having the danger man dropped, while Sayem took two in a chance inducing spell helped by an incredibly well taken low catch by Marsh. Howe was showing off some acrobatic fielding while Matt was dynamic, later taking two catches.

First change saw Marsh turn to Lando and Duke. The former got some genuine movement to bowl the remaining opener and then offered up pies to tempt two more while a Regina inspired Duke sent down three maidens before racing to a four wicket haul which included an outstanding caught and bowled.

Ightham's remaining men had both dropped down the order injured and both were fine strikers of the ball. Ziggy's leg spin was a delight but there was a brief spell where recent defeats were drawn to mind as their number ten opened up. Marsh then tightened Knockers' grip on the game once more before Springett wrapped things up with a peach of a second ball. A fine contribution from all and we found out in the pub afterwards that Snellers got his nickname from an Ightham player many moons ago. On to Mayfield.
