Match Report
There's quite a team forming in the great pavilion in the sky. Mike and Tony Martin, Norman Oldale, John Watson-Simpson, John Cutting, Ron Stanley, Geoff Enderby, David Daniel, Ian Miller, Mike Woodman, Ned Hutton, Keith Miller and of course the man whose name adorns this trophy, Steve Trounce. They'd have recognised a classic Knockers show here, hanging on to tie the match when a win was well within reach.
With a beer festival and the world cup quarter finals buzzing around as a backdrop, Knockers batted first with Ed Springett and JT getting them off to a cracking start, Ed retired having done the business and JT was caught trying to keep the run rate up after Ted Marsh walked having snicked to the keeper down the leg side. Gups strode out, survived a strong LBW shout and gradually built an innings while Guido blocked. James Mitchell played a breezy cameo, John 'Titchmarsh' Mitchell timed several shots well before nearly getting stumped yet again while going gardening. Kuts pushed us on to a comfortable score, Lando and Seb didn't trouble the scorer much and Ollie smashed a lovely straight drive to pretty much wrap things up with 142 on the board.
Ollie and Ted handled the first four overs and it looked like the game might be over quickly with Old Oaks stumbling at 12-2 with a wicket each for the quality seamers. JT and Seb kept the score very low so Guido as captain for the day, turned generous and stuck Lando and himself on and the Oaks tucked in despite a tidy catch in the covers from Ollie to bring about Scott's fifth wicket of the summer. JT's smart mid wicket direct hit run out checked the Oaks' progress but the run rate was definitely on the up with two retirees passing through.
Gups stuck at it, bagging an LBW in sight of his father's resting place, Titchmarsh and a returning Seb couldn't quite keep it comfortable as the required run rate dropped from about twenty an over to a final six balls with thirteen needed for the home side. Kuts was given the ball. Hard running and a boundary took it down to five needed from two but Seb Horner's thirty yard direct hit on a run wide raised spirits. It came down to three needed from the last ball. The boundary ball was well avoided by Kuts but the Oaks ran well to tie the score, giving the crowd that chose the cricket over the football a thrilling finish. For you Trouncey.
