Match Report

Knockers gathered at a top ground, bar (nearly) open and ready for us to begin the business end of the tour.

The toss was won and we were bowling, on the same pitch that England lost to Scotland on a month earlier. Hector Agnew opened for the men in maroon, and arguably exploited the what the pitch had to offer better than England’s Mark Wood, as he went at just six an over off his three. Perhaps he got lucky, or maybe it was his local knowledge, as Freddie opened with spin in Aran from the other end and the debutant picked up a wicket in his first over. Joe Root had to wait until his 14th over to claim a Scottish wicket. On came tour specialist Kuts who bowled an exciting four over spell, picking up two wickets along the way as him and Young slowed the sailing Grange ship.

Two more debutants were handed the ball and they did not disappoint. Quartermain and Graveling bowled with aggression and pace to go for just 4-23 in their combined seven overs. Freddie abused his power as captain and came on to clean up the tail. Everyone seemed to forget that he also bowled the opener who had come back in after his retirement. The pie chucking and bricks for feet of Duke were not missed as Knockers put in an impressive display in the field, labelled by some as the best that they have ever seen in a Knockers shirt.

Calver and Springett opened with gusto, as Ricky hit the first 2 balls for four, which led to Freddie’s contact at Grange accusing him of dishonesty. After the openers retired however these accusations were swiftly revoked as a classic KCC collapse followed. Aran fell for 2, and Mitchell for 4 after he produced a delightful late cut. Landers and Graveling also fell for single figure scores to give Grange a sniff of victory. Kuts, now 3 jugs deep, and Young departed to bring man of the match Quartermain to the crease, whose 27* took us to victory with a six to win it in the last over. This of course would not have been possible without Gez’s stubborn 0*.

All in all, a terrific Knockers performance at a lovely ground.
