Match Report

Knockers gathered at another superb venue willing, if not ready to take on a newly formed Heriots senior side made up of dads. We kept the score gettable with the ball but despite looking set halfway through our innings, Knockers ended well short. Ed Springett and Ollie Marsh shone with the bat while Scott Landers claimed a notable scalp with Jack Quartermain being the pick of the bowlers.

With Freddie Young called up for a T20 cup final for his local side, Ollie Marsh resumed the captaincy and opened the bowling with a radar slightly in need of recalibration following big work on the dancefloor the previous evening, he did at least look rather dapper in a pair of trousers bought from the bargain rack in the women's section of New Look. Kuts rattled in at the other end, bowling through and well while Jack Quartermain stepped in for the skipper.

Knockers needed a little something to get them going again and Quarts provided it with two wickets in two balls, both bowled, both deserved. Sean Weeraratna, a First Class cricketer and former Scottish international saw off the hattrick ball with a stout forward defensive. Aran Veneik partnered Quartermain for a while and was unfortunate that chances didn't go to hand.

Marshy turned to Lando who beat Weeraratna with his flight (migrating geese felt threatened) and Ed Springett stumped him. The batsman's face was not one that suggested he'd enjoy his teammates' chat as he trudged back to the pav.

Marsh and Hector Agnew saw us to the end with Hec picking up one which should have been two had a sharp chance at silly mid off stuck. Gez's stop at a very close leg gully (taking 'saving one' to mean getting under the grille) was both impressive and probably life saving. 124-4 didn't seem too daunting.

Calver began our response before running off the field of play screaming 'just a minute' as his cab pulled up ready to get him to his flight. Springett carried on the good work despite losing John Mitchell, Murray (our ringer signed while serving us at the pub earlier in the day) and Gez in quick succession. Consummate tourist, Quarts stepped in and by ten overs, only five were needed from each of the remaining overs.

Slow bowling led to slow scoring with only Marshy keeping the chase somewhere in the realms of possibility, his attempt at a six before retirement was unfortunate to go to the longest boundary and a safe pair of hands. Veneik, Kuts, Hector and Landers gave it a go but the boundaries weren't forthcoming.

Springett returned for the final six balls with Knockers needing sixteen. He got a goodun on the second and we wandered off rapidly exchanging thoughts of what might have been for what drinks needed to be bought. It led to watching sunset over a great view of Edinburgh from the balcony of a fine pavilion surrounded by mates. It weren't bad.
