Match Report

Knockers second visit to Four Elms this summer saw another competitive game with us coming out in top this time. Ed Springett's ton along with Paul Seldon's 85 in a record second wicket partnership set up the win with Rory Goodson's five-fer sealing the deal.

Captain Ollie Marsh won the toss and elected to bat in overcast conditions. Despite losing Finn early having looked in good touch, the skipper's decision was vindicated as Ed and Snellers put on a display of controlled aggression to run up a 200 partnership unperturbed by rain and some canny slow bowling.

Ed Springett's legside work added to his usual strong driving; several well timed flicks had the strength to race to the boundary as he reached his fifty in 32 balls. Paul Seldon was back in gear, choosing his time to attack with care as some beautifully timed cuts through an absent third man were savoured by those watching.

Springett brought up his ton in 69 balls with a mighty six over long-on. He eventually fell on 122 trying the same shot off Hills, a Kent IIs paceman who'd elected to bowl spin on the day. Callum McCulloch was unable to get started as Four Elms' skipper, Seegar bowled him and then got Snellers with a sharp c&b in a double wicket maiden.

After this late flurry of wickets we were left with Ted Marsh and a welcome return to the crease for Lynden, his baby boy watching on from the pavilion. Elbin was soon exposed to some potty language after his dad was run out being pushed to run three by Ted. Mr Marsh had just been informed that Mr Spencer-Allen hadn't done any running since last September. Ted made amends somewhat by hitting twenty off seven balls ending with a reverse sweep for four to take Knockers to 244-4 from their 35 overs.

Tea was epic. Pizza, sausages in Yorkshire puddings, cakes, an array to warm the cockles of any cricketer.

Ollie had sobered up enough from the previous night to open the bowling and he and Akhil found Four Elms in the mood to try to chase down our healthy total. One boundary from the first two overs suddenly led to a fifty partnership from seven overs as Jackson and Hills pushed on. Marsh split them up as Hills was caught by Ted Marsh who then took over bowling duties from his brother while Akhil bowled through to break up another blossoming partnership when Ollie Martyn held on at long-on.

Matt Landers began his Knockers bowling career watching another fifty partnership build as he and Ted toiled in tandem. In stepped Rory Goodson. 'Fresh' back from the States would be an overstatement as he and Ollie Martyn had spent much of our innings in the 'beer garden' section of the ground keeping an approximation of the score on the board.

As ever with Rory, pints means wickets as five fell in six overs of his inebriated excellence, including the key wicket of opener, Jackson, clean bowled along with two others. Rory's other scalps were assisted by catches to Finn and Ed Springett.

All the while, Four Elms had kept themselves in the hunt. Ollie returned to claim another and quash talk of Lando stealing the bowling trophy this summer before Callum sent down the final over with twenty needed, taking his maiden wicket for Knockers with help from Ollie's safe hands and not giving the home side a chance to reach their target. Solid stuff.
