Match Report

Knockers recovered from being on the ropes twice in a hard-won game at Eridge. Ted Marsh's half century gave us a chance before JT and Ollie Marsh matched a 63 year old record with 65 for the 10th wicket. A disciplined team performance in the field saw Knockers again face off defeat with Ollie Marsh picking up 3-7 and Ted's direct hit among many highlights.

Eridge won the toss and put us in. Ollie sent in two Landerses with Scott playing shadow batting against their pacy opener, Freddie Knott while his sister, Lucy - an ex-county player, caused us problems yet again. She bagged three, Matt, Scott and Ed Springett, all fairly cheaply with Kuts at least looking in great shape before JT, who happens to be on a run bet with him, gave an LBW. Ziggy brought out a much needed straight bat while Callum fell to a juggled caught and bowled to bring Ted Marsh to the crease with Knockers on 43-5.

Ted made light work where others had struggled, using all areas of the ground to drag us back into it, including successive smashes down the ground for four. He carried on through the loss of Ziggy, Akhil and Tommy, all to solid catches, but all three had supported Ted's rescue work well.

With 123-8 on the board, Ted was bowled after changing his shot three times on a slow straight one. His frustration shouldn't stop him enjoying his match-saving work. Just over ten overs left and JT and Ollie at the crease with an expectant Eridge surrounding them, possibly in part at seeing a pair of trainers at both ends.

They proceeded to bat with discipline, waiting on bad balls and dispatching them with aplomb. In-house competitions and temptation were put aside as the hoped-for 160 came up and then they pushed on with the only chance coming from the penultimate (no) ball. A record set by Bill Andrews and Ron Stanley in 1955 was matched and tea was much more enjoyable with 188 on the board.

Still, this was a 40-over match and Eridge looked confident. Ted Marsh opened with a maiden and together with Akhil they bowled us into a great start as Eridge's opening pair of Ellis and Fawls bided their time.

First change saw Jekyll and Hyde take a wicket either side of drinks. Dove did for Fawks with an off-cutter while Kuts got the remaining opener, Ellis, who'd batted superbly when Ziggy held well at mid-wicket to deny an otherwise deserved 50.

Parminter brought up his thousandth run for the home team with a fine drive but Kuts soon did for him when Springett changed direction mid-flight to take a great one-handed catch behind the stumps. It was symbolic of a great fielding effort by Knockers.

Forbes was still there though and displaying his usual class with wonderful timing and discipline. With second change bringing a generous first over from JT, Eridge were 138-3 with ten overs remaining and looking good to chase it down. Ollie Marsh stepped in at the other end and broke up a 41-run partnership, clean bowling Cary.

Forbes was busy bruising Lando at midwicket when not hitting boundaries and it was a moment of excellence from Ted that got Knockers excited about their chances. Changing direction after Lando's finger tips got something on another Forbes smack, Ted was around 35 yards away with one stump to aim for and F Knott sprinting back to complete a second run. Ted beat him comfortably to leave the umpire in no doubt.

Pooley came to the crease with 20,000 runs and 695 games under his belt. He'll probably not wish to hear how few Lando holds on to, but this one was a decent grab from an attempted smash through cover off JT - a very happy man given how things had started for him. His smile grew bigger when Forbes tried one smash too many as Ted continued his influence on the game with a calm catch at cow that belied its difficulty and importance. Eridge had gone from 154-5 to 155-7 in the space of very few balls.

Ollie bowled two more as he mopped up the tail, his last being a yorker that would have tested most but bagged a confident lower-order batsman in Goldsmith. Ziggy got to enjoy his one over, the last as Knockers completed a great effort against an opposition who could have run out easy winners.
