Match Report
Knockers began the season with a solid victory at Kemsing. Batting first, there were plenty of contributors, with Ted, JT on form and a rapid burst from Luke Andrew to push us to 210. Rory, Ziggy, Neil, Ted and Akhil then tied the home side down with Akhers bagging three and Ted two. Some late order big hitting brought the home side some joy but the run rate proved too much.
Captain Ollie Marsh opted for Ziggy and Scott to open and they negotiated the sloping track with very little bounce well enough before Scott missed a straight one. Matt went much the same way bringing Ted to the crease and he and Ziggy put on 47 for the third wicket. Zig’s run out exposed his 4:30am bedtime as he was well short having looked defiant. JT went out and another partnership began with Ted beginning to hit out. Ted survived a healthy LBW shout attempting a pull and then added insult to injury by playing the shot he had meant the very next ball. He was eventually trapped by a very slow ball as Ollie changed places with his brother.
Ollie, having had the luxury of training with Scott over the winter, was determined to avoid the same fate as his 25 took in big slaps and ornate forward defensives. JT was by now getting into gear and the pair put on 53 for the fifth wicket. Kemsing held their chances as Ollie and JT both fell to catches. Akhil’s strike rotation worked brilliantly with a sparkling innings from Lukini. Luke finished on an unbeaten 45 having taken 24 balls to get there.
As Ziggy, Ted and Luke traded late night one-upmanship at tea, Rory dropped the mike with a tale of waking up naked on the dining table with Lord of the Rings 3 blaring out from the television. As we entered the field again, we were unsure if he was subliminally trying to tell us something with this information.
Rory bowled well, despite informing us that he ‘was done’ about three balls in. Ziggy, who had to pass a cap, glasses, a jumper and probably an umbrella to the umpire each over he bowled, so over dressed was he for the occasion. The jumper, worn cape like tied around his neck, could only help him in the field as a denied LBW and two drops did little for his hangover. JT took a blow to the hand on his behalf, necessitating strapping.
Neil came on for Rory and Zig bowled through until Akhil took over and took the first wicket with a shooter (alas, poor Ziggy). Neil continued the mean run rate and handed over to Ted who took two, one LBW on the toes and another splitting the stumps. Akhil finished with champagne figures of 6-3-6-3 and the home side needing 20 an over. Anand's sharp caught and bowled to remove the remaining opener deserves mention.
Enter Scott. Four overs later Kemsing were forty runs better off but two down, one bowled (yes) and the other a top edge to JT's strapped hands at mid-off. JT was even more generous with his one over and Luke stepped in with Matt eventually taking over from Scott. Matt was unlucky to have one dropped (our seventh on the day) and Luke hit the woodwork having given the gloves to Ted. Nice work.
