Match Report

Knockers first loss of the season was a little unnecessary upon reflection but certainly had a few highlights, not least Will Blease’s debut that took in pacy left-arm seam and an unbeaten century that would have a produced a different result with a bit of support or even an eleventh man.

Marshy was late and naively asked Scott (100% toss loss stats) to ensure we batted. Fifteen minutes later, Ollie was opening the bowling alongside Akhil’s darts at the other end. The pair kept it very tight with just 27 coming off the first eight and Marshy bowling their opener in the third over.

First change brought Rory and Neil on as Bromley attempted to get a foothold in the game with a decent looking pair at the crease. Rory didn’t give them much but it took until the 27th over for the next breakthrough when he induced a leading edge to Marsh a mid-on. His next over, Goodson clipped the bails to remove the remaining opener.

This brought their skipper to the crease and after he confidently reverse paddled Neil to open his account he was then involved in a Knockers’ career highlight as he attempted to send the next ball flying back past Neil only to see him dive, Strauss in the Ashes like, to grab a brilliant caught and bowled. They were 84-4 after twenty overs.

Will and John soon came on third change and Will finally did for Wayley who’d survived two close stumpings already, bowling him second bowl. Or so we thought - as it was then called no-ball for overstepping. Three balls later he again hit the stumps, this time uncontested. Will’s wheels only turned quicker after that as he seriously caused trouble from his end while John figured out what track we were playing on at the other.

Wayley’s luck continued as John grew into the game, sending Mitchell straight to long-on and a usually safe pair of hands only to be dropped. John was now landing them, denying anyone else a look-in while Will gave way to Akhil who picked up a wicket last ball to leave Bromley 171-6 off 35. A decent effort with ten.

Tea was superb. Pizza, orzo, another pasta dish, quiche, rocky roads, a selection of fruits. We are talking Roman-orgy (food only) here and lots of negotiating down the batting order to try to recover from double helpings.

Will and Ollie opened. Marshy clipped the deck and the noise was convincing enough to see the finger go up much to his dismay. Callum walked out, hit a lovely cover drive for two and then played on. Snellers then sauntered out and between him and Will, the home side finally knew they had a bit of work to do.

With a fifty partnership approaching, it was beginning to look rosy when Paul sent one straight back to the skipper. Kal came and went and Scott hung around a tad longer but with little extra impression falling to a mis-timed drive straight back to the bowler. Only Will got the measure of the lack of bounce.

Akhil joined the fray as Will smacked his way into the sixties. The pair looked to have potential as Akhil’s pinch hitting and Will’s resolute defence and hard hitting but alas Akhil succumbed, bowled and Neil followed much the same way soon after.

John then walked out and played a perfect tail-end innings, helping bring Will one shy of his century and bringing a vague possibility of a win to the table in a partnership of 44. He was bowled last ball of the 28th over and Rory went out to watch Will bring up his ton, a superb effort, playing the conditions preying on anything remotely loose.

Rory took up his usual off-stump guard and charged everything, determined to turn every ball into a yorker, which he did well to defend. A risky two saw Rory run out and the end of a day that might have been. Will got a jug in and the smiles soon returned in the sunshine as thoughts drifted towards next month’s tour. It’s glorious enough just being a Knocker.
