Match Report

As Knockers gradually assembled at the ground, Finn managed to lose the toss and Knockers were asked to field first. At the start of the innings, we had nine men in the field and Snellers in the changing room. Finn decided to open the bowling with spin at both ends from Freddie and Akhil. This paid off as both spinners hit their lengths from the start and reduced the opposition to 12 for 2 with a wicket each. Freddie’s wicket came from a stumping from Springett, which he successfully completed with his second attempt at hitting the stumps. Kuts then replaced Freddie coming down the hill and decided to take an aggressive approach, targeting both batsmen with some aggressive short bowling. This brought a wicket as the number three top edged a pull to Akhil at fine leg who took a very good catch. Sherwood then established a big partnership as their captain and number 5 both hit fifties.

Duke replaced Akhil; he had unfortunately forgotten during his time in America that, in cricket unlike in baseball, it is traditional to let the ball land on the pitch rather than pitching it straight to the batsman. He quickly got back into it and indeed only conceded 5 runs in his last 11 balls. Tom came on to replace Kuts at the top end. He bowled very well with every ball on a good line and length. He was rewarded with two wickets, including that of their hard-hitting number 5 caught at mid-wicket by Snellers. Ziggy replaced Duke and made the crucial break through as he removed their captain. Freddie took the catch and was knocked over by the force from the ball. Knockers then ended the Sherwood innings quickly as Freddie, Akhil and John Mitchell wrapped up the tail. This was a very good performance in the field with every bowler (except the Duke, which delighted Freddie) taking a wicket. We also only bowled two wides all innings, which must be close to a record. Ed had a very good game behind the stumps, conceding only one bye from a Mitchell moonball which deceived everyone. It was a moonball of a similar quality to those bowled by Scott and demonstrated the benefits of winter nets with Scott’s coaching.

There was a very good spread at tea with several request to move down the batting order due to its quality.

Springett and Jai Shah opened the batting. The innings got off to an unprecedented start as not only did knockers have a left-handed bat but Ed fell for a golden duck. Ziggy and Jai rebuilt after this shock and reassured the team with a composed fifty partnership. Both played very well and put the team in a very good position. After two quick wickets, Tom and Snellers arrived at the crease. Tom continued his near-perfect debut as he hit a quick fifty, including ten boundaries. The only flaw in his performance was dropping a one-handed catch which would have been a screamer, if he had held on. (Most of the team wouldn’t have got a hand to it, especially after seven overs.) After Tom fell, there was a brief collapse as both John and Kuts fell to some good bowling.

Finn then came out to join Snellers. As Finn pushed singles, Snellers took the attack to the bowling and brought up a crucial fifty. Finn then hit a full toss straight to square leg and had to depart after taking 10 overs to score 9 runs. However, due to Snellers’ quick scoring, we had kept up with the required run-rate throughout this time. Freddie was next in; he hit two fours to settle the nerves in the pavilion. Knockers won with an over and two wickets to spare.

Overall, it was a very good performance against a strong team, who didn’t have any weak links. Knockers’ successful season continues as we head off on tour this week.

I would just like to end this report by congratulating our club captain, Ollie Marsh, on his recent engagement!
