Knockers
186-9
Staplehurst
187-6
Knockers begin the season with a loss at Staplehurst. A fine century from Snellers couldn't stave off a feeling that we were a little short and so it proved with the hosts chasing down 187 with a ball to spare.
Captain Ollie Marsh won the toss on a rare sunny afternoon and an even rarer complete set of Knockers present on time. Snellers and Ted opened and posted a healthy 74 full of lusty blows and sprightly running. Snellers was peppering the car park, forcing Scott to rethink his chosen parking space. Ted hit his own six the ball before top edging for the keeper to stroll round and collect.
Josh played himself in, John played himself out and Callum barely had a chance to play at all. All three provided catching practise. Ziggy and then Ben steadied the ship somewhat, the former departing LBW, the latter to another catch. Snellers was happily swatting away while the rest of us wore a path to the square. Scott got to punch Paul's glove after a roof tile breaking six brought up three figures, his eleventh for the club.
A miscue ended Sneller's brilliant innings. Scott and Ollie then wound up at the same end with the former skulking off, Hector did well before getting bowled and Rory added a magnificent bye as Knockers finished on 186-9.
Hector and Rory opened with Staplehurst beginning with intent. Rory settled any nerves when a half tracker got walloped to Ted at point and then a full toss picking out Ollie at mid-off, the latter removing a capable looking Savage. Hector then bowled two maidens with the second including a well taken edge to Ben with the gloves. Ollie took over from a puffing Rory while Hector bowled through. The skipper took the top of leg stump with his first ball and Staplehurst were 59-4 in the tenth over. while the required run rate never slipped from their grasp, knockers had a quiet confidence that they had wickets in the locker. Ollie picked up his second with Hector's wonderful over the shoulder running catch ending our sequence of fine grabs as Staplehurst pushed on from 87-5 with Knockers then putting down six, admittedly tough, chances.
Their captain, Fahad, found an aggressive partner in Smith who gave chances in between hammering the ball. When a glorious double chance to run him out wasn't taken amid the drops, the pair went on to add 99 for the sixth wicket before Ted removed their skipper in the last over, his 50th wicket for Knockers. Ollie scared the life out of them, Ziggy found form, Rory switched ends and Ted was tight. A glimmer of hope came upon the removal of Fahad with Rory pouching but the new man's inside edge got the final run needed off the penultimate ball. Cracking game, good chat on the bar terrace, great to see everyone again.
