Match Report

Knockers blasted their way to victory on a fine summer’s day in Chiddingstone. Our two openers swapped to the oppo as a nine-a-side game saw a 25-over format make the most of things with some excellent individual performances.

Captain Ollie Marsh put us in following a dramatic and not fully understood “game of fives” seeing Ted and Snellers switching to the Chiddingstone ranks. Jai Shah was authoritative in his approach, depositing Ted for two early boundaries while Oli Boreham breezed into the twenties having announced on the way out “no twos or threes”. Oli missed a straight one from Ted which brought Ollie out to face his brother, a scene not witnessed since the Marsh family back garden sometime in the early 2000s. Ollie stood firm on this occasion while Ma and Da Marsh watched on. Jai’s assertive approach both stopped Ollie running him out and helped him bring up a fine half-century before an edge went straight into the keeper’s glove before he knew much about it.

Scott trundled out and looked in reasonable touch until a miscued pull dollied to Ted at square leg. Ollie retired on fifty, bowing out with a fine drive through the covers. Jay looked set until hitting his wicket and it left John Mitchell (gorgeous cut shot – check) and Cullum McCulloch to see out the overs. John’s shot repertoire also includes a twelve o’clock shot to one four feet over his head and a cheeky one-handed tickle down leg. Callum was in the mood, with blocks and boundaries the order of the day as the pair pushed us past the 200 mark.

Tea had been taken early to watch the first half of England v Croatia. Boreham’s hamper was more of treat than the football as several players prepared for play using the bar.

Snellers walked out to face the Knockers music. We were quickly dancing to his tune with several search parties necessary as we tasted what it feels like to face the club’s leading run-scorer. Ziggy opened with Luke Stevens and the pair made a decent go of it with two hard-hitting batsmen quickly settling. Ollie brought himself on and struck first ball, bowling the dangerous Desuza. One became two when we all thought a nick had been dropped but soon found the Chiddingstone skipper had had his bail flicked off by another great Marsh ball. Jay took a while to settle before a few controlled overs brought the run-rate back in our control in the face of a Snellers’ onslaught. Ziggy’s switch to the other end saw Luke take a tidy catch at mid-off, his rippers finding a more happy home having replaced Jay.

The crowd (four people, one dog) were then roused to fever pitch as Ted wandered out to face the wrath of Scott. Lando had already been bamboozling Snellers with increasingly lofty bowling. Ted opted for attack, the first two balls disappearing into the next field. Scott got used to the change of ends, one dot brought on the Marsh sweats before one that didn’t turn (among many others) left the umpire little choice but to adjudge the danger man plumb. Ollie got busy with two further wickets in the same over, knocking over middle stump and two balls later, trapping the new man for nought.

With 34 needed off the final over, Oli Boreham tossed aside the gloves following a Mitch injury to see if he could oust Snellers. Paul was chasing a another century and very nearly got there, finishing unbeaten on 99. Oli will be wearing gloves for the foreseeable. Good fun.

Snellers and Ted's figures for the oppo tacked on here.
