Staplehurst
108-10
Knockers
111-4
Knockers got the 2022 season off to a good start with a six wicket win at Staplehurst. All eight bowlers contained the home team with Scott Landers picking up three late wickets before Paul Seldon paved the way for Jai Shah to bring home the win on a gorgeous May Sunday.
Marriage must be diminishing the skipper’s silver tongue practise as Ollie came back from the toss to announce we were to field in this 35 over game. He opened with Jonah and Jay and it quickly became clear the deck had something for everyone. Jonah was on the money from ball one with moments of test match-like line and length while Jay contrasted wonderfully with his questioning tweakers.
The Staplehurst openers stood firm until they took on Ollie’s arm at point with Jai finishing the job for a run out. Luke and Kuts came on first change with the former mixing it up before bowling Martin while Kuts’ settled down with a peach to strike middle stump to mark his fiftieth cap.
Marsh brought himself on for a typically tight spell before giving way to John who removed the remaining opener, Savage with Snellers catching Jai’s parry at slip and following three sixes off his bowling, Savage snr - bowled. Ziggy came on for Kuts and was ripping it from the off with Jonah and Scott taking the catches to take him to 50 wickets on his fiftieth appearance.
An eventful first over from Scott saw four chances go begging before he decided to take matters into in his own hands with a straight one. The final over saw him get a successful LBW appeal and Jai claim a very smart low catch off an edge.
Snellers was out of the blocks quickly during the chase with some sumptuous drives. Chris rotated the strike well before adding a cracking boundary himself. It looked ominous for Staplehurst as Paul was timing everything and a drop at square did little to cheer them. A fine straight drive preceded a solid catch to bring Jai to the crease with the job half done.
Jai was his usual commanding self and he mixed up off side drives with lovely pull shots to steer Knockers home despite the losses of Chris, Scott and Jay. John took it upon himself to stick around with Jai finishing just shy of his fifty. Great start lads.
