Match Report

The annual Trounce Memorial Trophy took place at a buzzing Vine on a glorious Summers evening in Sevenoaks. Knockers played their first ever Hundred format game, to some disgruntled murmurs from the old timers in the changing room.

A gentleman’s agreement replaced the toss, with stand in skipper Freddie ‘winning’ and batting first. O Marsh would be proud. With 6 Knockers present for the first ball, Fred decided to open with himself and Oli Boreham. Fred hit a couple of nice boundaries to get the ball rolling but was deceived by a well directed moon ball. Boreham at the other end eventually got into full flow with some big shots, eventually retiring on 28*. Matt Landers came and went quickly (with a strike rate of 200, team player), while JT and Guido built a decent partnership. JT looked comfortable at the crease and matched Boreham with a well earned retirement. Guido looked as if he had never been away. Fresh from checking emails, he got carried away with a delightful four, it was then sadly bowled. The dynamic duo of Kuts and Mitch put on nearly 50 together with some lofty blows and neat running. Kuts was bowled, bringing Stevo to the crease, who was also bowled (first ball). James, on his second Knockers appearance, put the pads on for the first time in eons and finished 0*; one for the average.

The pavilion was graced by Snellers’ presence, who after deciphering that the opposition only had 9, began licking lips at the prospect of a ‘net’ ahead of his league game the next day.

Agnew and Munday steamed in from down the hill, restricting Old Oaks to 7 from the first 10 ball ‘set’. Stevens picked up a wicket from the other end which bought Knockers legend Snellers to the crease. Some questionable captaincy followed as James, the beginner, bowled to Snellers, the class act, and one 6 was hit that nearly cleared the war memorial over the road from the Vine. Munday could’ve had a wicket caught and bowled, but after one was skied between him and JT, both called very loudly for the catch, which resulted in the ball depressingly bouncing in between the pair. Munday was eventually rewarded, as another skier catch was hit to in the vague direction of Fred and Hector. Hector wasn’t keen and could be heard shouting ‘Freddie’s Freddie’s’, to which Fred listened and pouched his second grab of the game. Fred bought himself on an claimed a wicket, bowling a quick 10-balls to get the over rate ticking. Stevo followed with a set of 10, picking up two more wickets on his way to a 3fer. The catch of the game (sorry Boreham) was one, as James at mid on nonchalantly caught the ball, and followed it with a classic ‘I caught it, how do I celebrate’ celebration. Hector has some learnings post game for the new Knocker.

On came Kuts who also bowled 10-straight with a good pace and aggressive length. A very smart one handed grab from Boreham behind the stumps have him a well earned wicket. James came on to bowl down the hill and picked up his first ever senior hard ball wicket, hitting the top of middle with a skiddy back of a length delivery. Mitch came in for the next 5 and went for 4 runs off his 5. JT and Kuts provided the next 5 each, with JT having Boreham to thank for a quick stumping. This did however bring the retired Snellers back the crease much the the excitement and nervousness of the fielding Knockers troop. Old Oaks needed around 50 off 20 balls, and skipper Fred smelt blood, bringing himself onto bowl at Snellers. Paul unfurled a delightful cover drive for four which had the skipper questioning his judgement. The run rate proved too much of a burden though as Snellers was bowled going for a maximum.

A professional and inclusive performance by Knockers saw home a 60-odd run victory. After a few jugs with the opposition, Guido honoured Trouncey with a speech in his honour. Many beverages were consumed and all in all it was an excellent evening of cricket. We look forward to next year’s Trounce Memorial Trophy.
