Match Report

Sultry June weather greeted a patchwork Knockers line-up against new oppo in Meopham. A fine opening partnership from Seb and Hec, a great tea, magnet fielding from James, great bowling from Neil and Gez, all ending in a well attended BBQ. It was the other bits in between that didn’t quite go to plan.

Freddie won the toss, won the 30-over debate and put the right pair in the middle. Seb was all breezy boundaries while Hector soaked up the tougher end. 72 runs danced their way onto the board from ten overs. Other Knockers began opening tabs at the bar.

A drinks break saw a refreshed Hec counter Boreham’s ’seven an over is slow going’ boundary-based advice with some tidy boundaries of his own before one got through. Oli pondered on why he receives the wooden spoon so regularly, perhaps one day he’ll make the connection. Scott came in and did very little while Seb continued to pick off balls good and bad. Matt joined the Landers efforts to turn the scorecard polka dot before Seb had his bails clipped with 70 next to his name. Classy stuff from Mr Horner.

Matt swapped with Akhil while Oli let his edges do the talking until one finally went to hand. Jay and Akhers then looked set to rebuild before both were caught trying to up the run rate. Gez chopped on and James was run out as Fred pushed for two off the last ball with an under par 174 on the board.

Tea stretched across two tables, veggie clearly divided from meat, all labelled. Pizzas, Mac n cheese bites, sarnies, fruits, cakes - on and on it went. Several triple trips were noted in the ranks with Jay requesting it become a weekly fixture. One suspects Meopham won’t mind us coming back anyway but kudos goes to whoever made the tea - a rare but welcome experience in these times.

Akhil could have had a wicket first ball. The four he went for instead was to typify Knockers’ generosity going forwards. Jay supplied our sole seam offering at the other end. Another Akhil chance went begging as the openers raced away until Jay found the strip and trapped Williams LBW. James had began his relationship with the ball at mid off, his Old Spice enticing the red leather wherever he went. Matt’s Deep Heat aroma did its best to burn the eyes of those downwind of him.

Golden arm Neil, in partnership with Freddie, began to give us a little hope. After another drop, the pair combined to remove the dangerous Bryant for 41 with Freddie showing us how to catch. JJ had by now popped down the local builders merchants and was busy erecting a wall in his corner of the field. Neil would trap two more in a fine spell of line and length. Freddie also got one via Hector’s hands. The Meopham top order had already done the damage, not least to surrounding parked cars, but a few more wickets and things might start warming up.

The only thing that really got fired up was the BBQ. JJ turned his arm over while Gez’s leggies were right on the money with a measly seven coming from twelve balls following a single over from Seb. Knockers had too few on the board to defend however as promising youngster, Holyoake hit the boundary to win in the 25th over.

The lads enjoyed beers and burgers in the early evening sun with the chance to chat well taken at a welcoming ground that has its charms, not least pints under a fiver. Good people to lose a game of cricket with, on to Penshurst.
