Match Report

On a wet Staplehurst wicket the Knockers were put into bat. This was a good thing as by the time play was due to start there were only 4 Knockers at the ground. They arrived 5 minutes later but there was only 10 players that day due to a late drop out. The last to arrive was Guy Howe a magnificent 2 hours late. Just in time to play his mammoth innings - more of that later.

Paul Styles and Lynden Spencer-Allen opened the batting and got off to a good start. they made a stand of 60 prior to Paul being bowled for 18 attempting to pull the ball. Lynden went on to make 53 before playing the ball onto his stumps from wide on the off side. Stuart Seldon was out similarly a short while afterwards which left Ed Irwin and Corin Spencer-Allen at the wicket. Corin unleashed a full blooded straight drive against the spinner. Ed was backing up and the ball careered off the bowlers foot and into the stumps leaving Ed run out for 4. Corin went on to make 18. Peter Smith and Adam Petters maintained resistance for a while until Peter guided a ball towards a fielder to be caught for 7. Adam continued and went on to make 31. He was the last to be out but not before the heroism of Guy Howe. Told to stay there when he went in he did just that. 23 balls for no runs. In fact only one attacking shot which missed the ball. Thanks For Coming Guy!
Knockers ended 164 all out (for 9 anyway).

Most had too much to eat at the amazing spread for tea and so it was left for Paul Seldon and Lynden Spencer-Allen to open the bowling. In a tight first 15 overs they were limited to 23 but only 1 wicket fell. Paul was very unlucky not to take some wickets turning out his best spell of bowling in a long while but to no avail. Lynden took the wicket LBW. Paul Styles and Ken Cowan came on to tease the wicket but failed to have any luck. Adam Petters and Corin Spencer-Allen finished proceedings off. Corin was the only one to take wickets with 4 for 11 runs from a well crafted spell of bowling using swing to full advantage. The only other wicket to fall was to a run out. The ball was lofted into the air off Ken, Corin ran in to catch it and fell just short. The ball went just underneath him and they attempted a single. Lynden threw it in quite wide of Stuart at keeper who did well to retrieve it and threw it at the stumps dislodging the bail - a comedy of errors.

Staplehurst finished on 121-6 leaving the game a winning draw for the Knockers.
