Sidcup
132-4
Knockers
122-9
Knockers fell short in a soggy T20 match at Sidcup to close the season. Fine work restricting the hosts to 132 looked to set up a strong batting line-up for victory. This being Knockers, we had other ideas.
JT’s iffy ankle took us down to ten, but Sidcup graciously loaned us an eleventh in the field; the shortage would still come into play later on. Captain Ted guided a varied attack on, rarely losing control of the run rate.
Ted yorked their opener in a one over opening spell, while Luke spun his magic at the other end. Jonners replaced Ted and trapped the remaining opener, Rolls, amid a very tidy spell from the newlywed.
Scott mixed it up after Jaychandera took to his moon balls and Snellers took the catch when a thick edge was parried by Jai with the gloves. All the while Hitch had been plugging away and his unbeaten 66 was far and away the biggest score on the day and made the difference.
Akhers took out Saldanda, who’d tonked us around in previous visits. It involved Luke cooly taking a skier at mid off. While no further wickets fell, Adil, Akhers and Ted kept Knockers in control.
A quick-ish turnaround failed to get ahead of the expected rain. Snellers and JJ opened with Paul getting Knockers off to an incredible start as 22 came off the first two overs. JJ crept into double figures with the king maker for the season before Excalibur failed to keep a straight one out. We think it might be made of foam.
This only brought recent centurion, Will to the crease and even though the rain worsened, it still felt sunny result-wise. We clearly felt the story should be far more interesting.
Snellers played round one, Matt got triggered next ball, and Adil nearly handed over the hattrick with a reverse pull that can best be described as unwise. A lull in scoring was eventually countered by Adil with successive boundaries before he was bowled.
Jai bounded to the crease with enthusiasm and was timing it well, rotating the strike nicely with Will who was rather unfortunate to be given LBW to a ball that looked like it would have cleared the stumps. It was getting a little more nervy now at 62-5 off eleven, considering the start.
It got worse when Akhers chipped to extra cover. Luke then decided enough was enough and he went monster mode. Two ginormous sixes sat prettily amid brutal fours. The game had changed again and a quick victory looked back on the cards.
Enthusiasm then got the better of Luke. He came up short in an optimistic quick single attempt. If only the bat had been grounded. Scott came and went, bringing Ted to the crease with 96 on the board and the best part of four overs remaining.
Jai and Ted got the rhythm spot on, Jai still rotating the strike and Ted striking out. With two overs to go Knockers needed 14 runs. The pair brought up 123 when Sidcup’s Tuppin clipped the top of leg stump to end Ted’s onslaught. A number eleven might have seen us home but we’ll never know alas.
Good bar support ensued and damp Knockers showed no signs of damp spirits. A transitional summer this one but a nice foundation laid down as we look to celebrate the club’s 75th anniversary next summer. Winter well chaps.
