Sevenoaks Vine
239-7
Knockers
141-10
The Vine fixture has always been the most important game of the season for the Knockers team, a classic David and Goliath encounter that Knockers have claimed on several occasions. Sadly today was not to be one of them. As if it wasn't bad enough just surveying the talent the Vine had on show before the game, things went wrong from the first ball when Ollie Boreham commited one of the most heinous crimes commited on a cricket field since the days of Hansie Cronje
With everyone fired up Lynden Spencer Allen's first ball tickled the edge of Sussex trialist John Bowden's bat only for Boreham to catch the ball, appeal, and then realise that the ball was lying on the floor, in that order. Bowden then proceeded to despatch the ball to all four corners of the ground in a sparkling innings of 151n.o., and was also dropped three times in an over. The Vine racked up a total of 239-8, only 88 runs not coming off Bowden's bat.
Knockers reply always seemed an uphill battle even before the team were reduced to 19-5 by the pace of Alex Cooper and Neil Shirreff. Having done so, a recovery was led by Lynden Spencer-Allen (46) and also Ed Irwin, Paul Seldon, Martin Thomas and Nick Jariwalla making double figures. Martin's innings was particularly memorable for knocking 20 runs off the first four balls of one over only to perish on the fifth. However, the demise, though delayed, was ultimately inevitable, and the lower order have to take credit for preventing humiliation. For the record, the fines committee deservedly took 33 quid - a record amount.
However, when the Knockers are down they don't stay down for long and the loss only served to speed the arrival at Guthrie's 21st birthday party. Coincidence? I don't think so.
