Knockers recorded their first win of the season against Sheldwich, and in some style. Knockers won by 139 runs, with only two wickets lost and with 8 overs of the 20 still to go. Captain for the day Corin Spencer-Allen lost the toss and Knockers were surprisingly asked to bat. As ever Paul Styles and Stuart Seldon opened the innings and got the team off to a good start, putting on 69 runs until Styles was caught on the boundary for 36. Seldon then continued his innings with debutant John Greaves at the crease and recorded another Knockers 50, although his innings was ended when he was caught at gully. This would be where the Knockers collapse usually starts, however the second debutant of the day, Martin Goff, had other ideas and quickly asserted himself at the crease. After surviving an early chance when dropped in the deep, he laid into the Sheldwich bowling and brought up his 50 in just over 10 overs. Greaves also batted well for his 68 and the pair put on an unbroken 119 for the third wicket, allowing Knockers to declare early on 235-2.
Any concerns that the declaration was somewhat generous were quickly allayed by excellent opening spells from Martin Thomas (2-11), who struck on the first ball of the innings, and Paul Seldon (1-8). With Seldon unable to achieve his normal amounts of swing, the captain decided to bring the returning Ed Irwin into the attack and once again an excellent spell resulted, with Irwin taking 3-11 off five overs. Sheldwich were then completely on the ropes at 22-5. Meanwhile Steve Trounce was brought into the attack and he bowled a beguiling spell of 7-0-37-2, including an excellent catch in the deep by Martin Thomas. Sheldwich eventually subsided to 96 all out, an excellent Knockers performance and one which we will hope to repeat in future weeks.
