Knockers
259-6
Ightham
263-6
Knockers were very unlucky to lose a highly entertaining game against Ightham yesterday in spite of an excellent all round performance from Lynden Spencer-Allen, a career best Knockers score from Guthrie Miller, their highest total of the season, and a record sixth wicket partnership for the club.
Winning the toss, captain Stuart Seldon elected to bat first and make use of a very dry wicket with a lightening quick outfield. A solid start was made by Seldon (17), Will Goulstone and Rob Joynes as Knockers quickly progressed to 49-1. However the match then changed with the introduction of former Kent fast bowler Nick Preston who removed Seldon and Boreham with unplayable deliveries as Knockers slumped to 78-4. Enter Chris "Dosser" Childs who removed Preston from the attack using his "rabbit in headlights" impersonation. He was however quick to punish his replacement, Paul Styles (kindly lent to the opposition) until unfortunately treading on his wicket for 12. Once again Knockers looked in trouble, but Guthrie Miller came to the crease and quickly set about using some of the techniques he has learnt in pre season hockey in despatching the ball to all parts of the boundary. Lynden Spencer-Allen quickly found his feet as well as the two put on a massive partnership. Not even the return of Preston (2-37) could stop the flow of runs, and he was despatched for a huge six by Miller. Miller looked set for his maiden Knockers ton but looking to push on for the declaration ran himself out after a sharp return from Preston. Knockers declared there and then on 259-6.
Knockers were very confident of at least a winning draw after the performance, but sadly it was to prove not to be. Spencer-Allen struggled with his rhythm early on while batting partner Miller came out of the attack after an over. Steve Trounce replaced Miller, but could not tempt the opening batsmen into any rash shots. Spencer-Allen soon picked up the wicket of Styles (14) with a leg side full toss smartly caught by Childs but no3 bat Brittan (49)carried on with opener Jeremy Preston to put on a big partnership. At the start of the 20 overs only 110 runs were required, a small amount considering the quick outfield. However Knockers did well to slow the rate down, with the returning Spencer-Allen (5-93) finding his range and Ken Cowan bowling accurately. It wasn't quite enough though, as Jeremy Preston (106) went on to complete his ton and Nick Preston (55no), using his experiences of high level cricket, shepherded the tail home on 263-6.
