Match Report

In the first game arranged through the club's web site, Knockers took on the Good Olde Boys, of Farnborough, Hampshire. First casualty of the day was Paul Seldon who "lost his contact lenses" while living the rock and roll lifestyle in Docklands somewhere and decided he couldn't get back. Describing themselves as "just a social side" all 10 Knockers players looked forward to filling their boots

However, a premature arrival at the ground was enough to send Knockers back off to the pub again as a moss covered, worm cast covered, soaked wicket was combined with a bumpy, long grassed and uneven outfield. Some of the outfield was even being reseeded! The promise of playing at a posh company ground (even though it was DERA!) was quickly forgotten.

As they only had 8 men at the time (Guido and Schofield still arriving from a successful footy game) Knockers elected to bat first and were given a solid start through Paul Styles (13) and Stuart Seldon, with Styles quickly locating the boundary, something Seldon would not do for 18 overs.
However, once he mistimed a pull shot aiming another big hit, Corin Spencer Allen arrived at the crease and made light of the difficult conditions, putting on a brisk 50 partnership with Seldon (37). Spencer-Allen then accelerated the score with some excellent drives and hard hitting belying the conditions and deserved better than to be removed on 96, once again failing to achieve his maiden Knockers ton despite a hugely successful season. Comedy support batting was received from Lynden Spencer-Allen (although this was really just another failure for him) and Phil Woollacott, with some of the most ridiculous batting since the days of, well Phil Woollacott really. The two footballers then scrambled the team through to a 35 over total of 201, with some quick running and many false shots.

Knockers bowlers quickly took advantage of the friendly conditions with Lynden Spencer-Allen (2-4) striking twice in the first over with some pacy deliveries. We have speculated that their captain was their only "proper" cricketer (well they surely must have had at least one!) but as he was removed straight away we will never know. Wickets were then shared amongst the team with Guy Howe (2-17) and Paul Schofield (2-17) being the main wicket takers, as the opposition batting collapsed. Even Pete Smith got in on the act, with one of his "hand grenades" being caught at cover.

The hero of the day however was surely Trouncey (2-15) who despite bowling several loose balls reached his 150th wicket for the club with a stumping by Styles. He celebrated by going on to take a further wicket on the day and will now aim for the 200. Well done Steve.
