Match Report

It is always with sadness that the last game of the year comes about. It is especially nice to win on that day too and that is just what the Knockers did. With a fairly strong side the Knockers took to the field which was hard but fairly green. Some good bowling failed to penetrate the opening stand as it reached 50. It wasn't until Corin Spencer-Allen came into the attack that the stand was broken when he hurried the opener into a pull shot which was looped to Stuart Seldon. The next wicket was to fall to a run out from C Sp-Allen and C Irwin when the batsmen chose to run when the ball went straight to Corin. Lynden Spencer-Allen and Ed Irwin both came back for another spell and took one wicket apiece with Ed's coming from a tidy catch from Lynden. The surprise strike bowler of the day was to come in the form of one HR Botting who made light work of the Staplehurst batting taking 2 wickets in 3 overs. Some indifferent bowling was also seen from Guy Howe, Nick Jariwalla and the declaration bowling of Paul Styles. The standard of fielding was good as Knockers put the pressure on the Staplehurst batsmen. Charlie Irwin put pressure on of another kind as tempers between the two keepers frayed with neither on coming out on top of the verbal assaults! The Staplehurst innings ended on 183-6 dec.

The start of the Knockers innings was somewhat bizarre. For one there was Botting and secondly there was Botting smacking the ball all around the pitch. So much so that when he reached 40 Paul Styles still remained on 0! Botts reached his 50 but met his demise soon after as he was caught in the deep. Stuart Seldon never really looked comfortable as he was dismissed for 5. He did manage to get rid of some of his energy by chasing Jariwalla around the pitch. Corin was the next in and after sweetly off driving his first ball for 4( a bit of a trademark at present) and a few others he was bowled by their opener for 12. Enter the out of form Lynden Spencer-Allen. He and Paul Styles put on a 79 run partnership to put the Knockers within 4 runs of victory. Lynden fell trying to hit those 4 caught at mid on for 40. Although this did bring about the second showdown of the day between Charlie and their keeper. Charlie was stumped for 0 which brought about a torrent of abuse from both keepers. It was left to the experience of Paul Styles, whose innings was one of poise and patience, in the presence of Ed Irwin to finish the game off with Knockers winning by 5 wickets. A good way to end the Season.
