Match Report
Well the curtain rose on Knockers 2005 season with a pleasant fixture against Sissinghurst on the 15th May. A beautiful hot and sunny day greeted the Knockers as they travelled through some lovely countryside to their hosts ground.
Knockers arrived, team morale was high and the excitement of the pending season was at fever pitch. Miller as 'el Capitan' strode out to the middle to partake in the 'toss!' Knockers were asked to bat first, Sissinghurst surely remembering the resistance of Howe, Styles and Landers In the previous years fixture.
Goff and Seldon.S marched out to open the account for the 2005 season. With the unfortunate early dismissal of Goff in the second over the Seldon bothers were united with one aim.
Tight bowling from Sissinghurst ( 24 runs from the first 10 overs ) was not disheartening the courageous Seldons who plied their trade with finesse and patience. Fifty was achieved after 16 overs, the Knockers answer to the Waughs were gaining control.
Seldon.S reached a battling Fifty from 25 overs with Seldon.P joining him shortly afterwards. Seldon.S' innings was cruelly ripped from him by a somewhat petulant trigger like LBW decision from an Umpire now seeking anonymity, he had reached a fantastic 71.
Seldon.P went on to reach a gratifying 58, with Miller replacing Seldon.S the batting took on a more aggressive style, with a tentative start it didn't take long for Miller to find his stride and by the time Spencer-Allen replaced Seldon.P at the crease Miller was playing some fine strokes. Spencer Allen duly joined the batting foray and together started to dominate again where the Seldons had left off, with Spencer-Allen escaping a dropped catch highlighting the more aerial approach that was being adopted by the pair.
Seldon.P's wicket was to be the last of the innings and with Miller Not Out for 30and Spencer-Allen Not Out for 25 Knockers had reached a confidence boosting 191-3.
Knockers, fed and watered began their defence, Rumary opened the bowling from the Pavilion end with some generous deliveries, then some more generous deliveries, and needless to say he was quickly withdrawn from the attack.
While Sandling continued to bowl tightly Spencer-Allen fired up from the Pavilion end, all three bowlers had now found that anything short of full was not good enough.
Sandling finished with a hard earned 0-18 from 6, while the Sissinghurst openers began to settle an intriguing run chase ensued.
The swing of Seldon.P caused problems and he followed a positive batting spell with a confident period of bowling while his brother excelled behind the stumps adding weight to a man of the match award after his fine 71.
The bowling continued to find the pitch lifeless and increasingly easy for the batsmen to play from the back foot.
Eventually the Knockers 191 was assailed with only 9 overs remaining. A defeat but plenty of positives to come from the game, Knockers were still in high spirits and look forward to the next fixture, Farningham on Thursday the 19th May in the Clark Trophy.
