Match Report

On a day characterised by abject performance and occasional strong team play Knockers still could not force their way to that elusive first win of the season.

With late arrivals (CSA, A Howe-esque 1 hr late, leading to heavy fines despite a strong defence) Knockers reshuffled the pack and chose to bat. Styles departed early, unable to repeat last years century leaving Botting (2 appearances in a row) and the 100kg Miller to consolidate. A reasonable start soon fell away to 40 - 5 with Batsmen failing to apply themselves on a tricky surface. This brought the hungover Corin Spencer - Allen to join Martin Thomas at the crease. With a mixture of resolute defence and powerful stroke play the pair milked the bowlers for 73 runs off ten overs including 4 huge sixes. Thomas went attempting to punish the change bowling for a 'back in the groove' 38. Corin moved onto a season high of 60 and with support from Schofield, Smith, Trounce & Darry Knockers closed on 162 all out, a reasonable return considering the poor start.

In reply Paul Seldon took 3 -36, in what more than one judge described as his 'best Knockers performance with the ball', well supported by speedster Ed Irwin and the reduced pace of Corin. The introduction of Darry's 'Arsenal' (a mixture of cross words and bad and good balls in perfect sequence) brought about an increase in opposition run rate, but as is often the case led to a few wickets too.

The omens looked good for a Knockers win but Staunch defence from the Oppo tail and a couple of missed half chances meant the game petered out with Shoreham at 138-9. Steven Trounce failing to take the final wicket in a tense last over.

A game enjoyed by all led to a successful return for the fines commitee and with the return of Lynden, Guy, Jarri and Charlie next week funds for the curry will get even greater no doubt.
