Match Report

This match will have to go down as another "defeat snatched from the jaws of victory" for Knockers who batted well but could not restrict the opposition reply. Knockers batted first and started with the tried and tested opening pair of Seldon and Styles. Both shaped up nicely on a seaming wicket until Styles was caught behind, bringing to the crease the in-form captain Guthrie Miller. He was straight into his stride, flaying the bowling all around the park and quickly brought up another fifty before unfortunately holing out. This only brought out Ben Cobb to the crease, after his fluent innings of the week before. Again he had little difficulty, with the only interruption being a rain break that led to an early tea. Following the interval (which Darry amusingly slept through, thus missing the food), Seldon and Cobb continued until the moment seemed right to declare. Unfortunately for Seldon, he was on 99no by this stage and Ben Cobb was caught for 34. Geoff Smith hastily donned his pads to allow Seldon to progress to his second consecutive century and the declaration was immediate.

Four Elms commenced their innings at 5:30, giving them an hour plus the twenty overs, but Knockers were confident that they had more than enough runs on the board (somewhat misplaced!) They started well and Ben Cobb immediately removed Jimmy Ormond, and then taking two further wickets, to leave Four Elms on 44-3. (Odds against them winning at this stage about 100-1!) However, Alan Crowhurst got his eye in and with their no5 bat coming in and chancing his arm with some attacking strokes a big partnership was formed and despite numerous bowling changes Knockers could not stem the flow of runs, not helped by some indifferent fielding. The no5 bat was run out but Knockers could not stop the momentum and Crowhurst finished 129no to see his team through to a very unlikely victory.
