Holmesdale
186-10
Knockers
187-9
Knockers secured their first win for over a month in a highly dramatic game against Holmesdale, eventually winning by one wicket off the final ball of the game, after a final wicket stand of 45. Captain Guthrie Miller won the toss and sensibly elected to field. Knockers made a good start, with Lynden Spencer-Allen (1-16) removing Max Melbourne and Paul Seldon (2-28) removing Dan Cotton and Mike Bryant. However, no3 bat Colin Simpson took the fight to Knockers after a shaky start and eventually went on to make 99. Knockers struck back though through Andy Darry (3-46), Edward Darry (2-6), Ken Cowan (1-43) and Guthrie Miller (1-36), eventually bowling Holmesdale out for 186.
Knockers reply started badly losing Stuart Seldon in the first over before Styles (12) and Paul Seldon (14) steadied the ship. However wickets fell and Knockers were reduced to 54-5. Captain G Miller contributed 23 but it was Lynden Spencer-Allen who really took the fight to Holmesdale batting at no7. Wickets continued to fall but sensible partnerships were formed as Knockers progressed to 131-6. However, sensible late hitting from Spencer-Allen and some rather unintelligant fielding took Knockers within range and five runs were required from the final over of the game, with Trounce on strike. A leg side bye from the fifth ball allowed Spencer-Allen to be back on strike for the final delivery of the game. The bowler sensibly bowled it faster but Spencer-Allen (83*) got enough bat on it to carry the ball in the air to long on - straight to where a fielder was positioned. Even with a drop the game should still have been Holmesdale's, but the hapless Dan Cotton managed to come in too far to attempt to catch the ball, and eventually attempting to catch it over his head simply succeeded in helping the ball on its way to the boundary. Cue excited celebrations from all watching - who had had more than enough drama on the afternoon with England's win against the Aussies. So Knockers continue to hold an enviable record over Holmesdale, and the team were able to return to Sevenoaks for several bank holiday celebratory drinks. Next week: Coleman's Hatch.
