Match Report

On an overcast Sunday afternoon Knockers were asked to bat by the Shipbourne skipper, on a track and day that would suit the bowlers, and that looked so when our emphatic opening batsman S Seldon (0) was caught behind in the forth over. The Shipbourne attack knew their pitch and bowled perfect lines and lengths ,it took Knockers took 5 overs to find the boundary, in came Paul Seldon and after a slow start was starting to look in good form. After a steady start at the other end G Smith was building an innings/partnership with Paul but unfortunately got a straight one and he was bowled on 8. Enter Ben (corny, extras, smelly) Cobb, some good shots and some not so good shots brought about the 50 partnership until Ben mistimed one to mid off and was caught (again) (27). Now it was the turn of the prolific batting wicket keeper O Boreham one ball later and he is on the way back to the pavilion, offering no shot to a ball that umpire Seldon considered very straight (lbw) (0). Hugh Rumary came in to steady the innings but to no avail he also fell prey to the straight one and the stumps were everywhere (0). Dan Turner came in as support for Paul ,by now had his half-century, he couldn’t really get going and was caught behind trying to play his kp’esque slog (15). Ben (the ankle) Rumary came in and hit some lusty blows until his stumps were splattered by the bowler (11). By now Knockers tail was exposed Paul (back bone) Seldon holed out on 65 leaving K Cowan, Andy and Ted Darry to add another 6 to the total and Knockers were out for 138.
After a lovely tea Knockers took to the field with a renewed vigour and lively opening spells from Cobb (7-1-22-1) and P Seldon (10-1-43-2) managed to turn the pressure on the Shipbourne batsmen. Unfortunately they started to settle and 1st change Cowan (4-0-16-0) could not upset the middle order. Ted Darry continued his impressive form with a tidy 5-0-16-0 but we still couldn’t get a breakthrough. Then acting Skipper A Darry Brought D (bad back) Turner (5.3-0-25-1) into the attack and after a few loose deliveries found the spot with some unplayable balls and finally trapped the left-handed slogger lbw. But it was not enough as they crept through to the total with 6 wickets in hand and 4 and a half overs left.
