Match Report

Traditionally a difficult fixture for the Knockers, a resounding win was most welcome on a fine May evening.

Midweek fixtures are even more liable to be fulfilled by a group of misfits than their weekend counterparts. The game didn’t get underway until 6:10pm when the last of the Knockers arrived. Richard Harrison, who played in the corresponding fixture last year and three debutants, Shamil Appathurai, Tom Crummey and Tom Sullivan bolstered the regulars. The Orbillian’s played with 10 men.

Elected to bat first, Stuart Seldon (71) and Appathurai (1) immediately took the game to the Orbillians. Seldon in particular, was commanding in his approach and his dominance of the ball may have spurred his partner into a risky run to try and keep up. Appathurai’s run out brought Andrew Marshall to the crease (67no) and the rest of the Knockers could sit back and admire the calm quality this partnership put on show.

Seldon timed the ball beautifully and on another ground devoid of the long and relatively steep sun dried slopes, a century would not have been beyond reason. Marshall’s aggressive and robust batting disguised a man in complete control of his innings.

Seldon’s departure - an over the shoulder catch - came as something of a surprise to his team mates who had been enjoying the spectacle. Scott Landers (2) returned to the side after his knee operation and did his best to keep the now flying Marshall on strike. Dan Turner (4no) went out for the last ball after Landers was bowled to crack a fine four, bringing the score to 160 for 3.

The Knockers took to the field in a well earned confident mood. A miserly Turner (1–7) and Harrison (0–19) opened the bowling and were quickly informed that the Orbillians were going to attack back. Turner ceded the bowling to Ben Rumary (1-20) after two overs and when Rumary found rhythm, he took a wicket that edged the Knockers towards victory.

It was however, Marshall (3-16) who turned the game completely in the Knockers’ favour. His four over spell took three key wickets to wipe out the Orbillians’ healthy run rate and reduce their stubborn resistance.

Sullivan (1-9) and then Andy Darry (0-13) continued the pressure, whose spells included a run out from the work of Turner and Seldon, who manned the gloves. Hugh Rumary (2-6) and a returning Turner, taking his wicket in his third over capably saw off the tail to finish (120 all out) a glorious evening for the Knockers in the welcoming and excellent Orbillians' ground.
