Match Report

Smith XI 173/8
Knockers 170/7

The Smith XI played out an exciting draw in this seasons encounter. Put into bat the Smith XI made a solid start through Knockers legend Pete Smith (13) and Ben Cobb as they put on 40 for the first wicket in quick time, riding their luck at times as Cobb was caught at square leg off the bowling of Dan Turner only for a no ball to have been given. The introduction of Andy Darry put pressure onto the Smith XI batting line up as he took 3 wickets for just 9 runs and left the batting team in a precarious position at 70/4. Ben Cobb continued and moved onto 73 before becoming Ted Darry's first victim, and possibly the unluckiest batsmen ever, as he was lured out of his ground, to be stumped by Boreham. A quickfire 26 by Nick Cobb along with Richard Smith (16) and William Smith (12) helped push the total to a challenging 173 at tea.

The Knockers started well with Paul Styles (21) and Rivhard Botting dismissing the bowling with regularity. The introduction of Ben Cobb bought about the end of Styles though Botting (51) continued to punish the bad ball and quickly moved towards his second half century in as many innings. With wickets beginning to tumble, Oli Boreham showing more interest in the golf, being bowled by Tim Smith for 4, and the destructive Dan Turner bowled for 4, the Smith XI came back into the game. The crucial wicket of Botting bought to the crease skipper Guthrie Miller (53*) who took the attack back to the bowling as he began hitting the boundaries while being ably supported by the slightly more defensive and watchful Lynden Spencer Allen (6). With 17 needed off the final 2 overs Spencer-Allen was superbly caught on the boundary by Tom Wackett off Tim Smith, and hopes of the win beginning to fade. The final over bought about the fall of Ben Rumary, but Knockers were unable to score the 11 needed and fell an agonising 3 runs short of victory, with Ben Cobb finishing with figures of 4-33 off 13 overs
