Otford
168-9
Knockers
169-1
The Knockers began the 2009 season with a good win against a young Otford team. There were excellent performances with the bat by the Cobbs and Captain Guthrie Miller took four wickets. Otford's last pairing comprised of their youngest players but whose straight bat and shot selection proved an unbreakable partnership of 44.
Otford chose to bat first on what started out as a gloriously warm Sunday in May. Ben Cobb (8-0-22-0) started his first spell taking full advantage of the wind direction and slope to produce excellent pace. Ken Cowan (9-1-20-1) produced the first breakthrough with a lone LBW shout that was given.
Dan Turner's figures (7-2-35-1) should have been a little healthier but for some loose fielding and a shot that split the slips. A ball that clipped the leg side bail was just reward for his efforts after he replaced B Cobb. Andy Darry (7-1-32-0) came on at the other end and one of his traps may have worked but for a short boundary.
Guthrie Miller (5-0-18-4) then replaced him and in partnership with first Matt Young (2-0-15-0) and then the more fruitful Paul Styles (4-1-8-2) made Otford regret a slow score rate as they brought the hosts to being on their last man in this 10 a side game with only 124 up. The highlight of Miller's haul being a fine over the shoulder moving catch by Cook.
Paul Cook (2-0-12-0) and returns from B Cobb and Cowan could not break the last partnership of Otford. Tea came with the hosts on 168-9; a gettable score especially considering a tricky outfield.
Paul Styles (10) and Tom Cobb (60 no) opened the chase for the Knockers. Styles' stroke play was in evidence before a looping edge proved his downfall at gully. Benn Cobb (78 no) then stepped into the fray and got to his 50 first which included two successive sixes the first of which cleared a long straight boundary. Tom Cobb hit much of his half century in singles and didn't look back after being dropped on 44. Ben Cobb then saw the total achieved in style with another beefy six as a cold wind and diminishing light failed to knock the glow off of a great start to the season.
