Match Report

A strong Knockers team fell short to a determined Linden Park CC in plush Tunbridge Wells surroundings. The visitors did well with the ball but were unable to reach the required run-rate with the bat despite a sterling effort by Ben Cobb in this 40 over match. Edward Darry posted his best bowling return for the Knockers.

Put into field first, the Knockers watched 12 runs fly off of the first over as Linden Park found Will Smith's (6-0-45-0) looseners to their liking. Dan Turner (8-1-35-0) sweated out the previous night at the other end.

Ben Cobb (5-0-23-1) replaced Smith and made the first breakthrough when Fraser Mackenzie (29) edged to glovesman Tom Cobb. Edward Darry (8-0-55-5) took over from Turner and removed the other opener, Matt Elliot (47) who mis-judged a charge. Darry then went on to bowl Matt Collins (19) and snare Tom Corner (13) caught by Tom Cobb. The younger Cobb (5-0-15-1) replaced his brother to bowl Andy McBride (18) and batten down an end.

Darry then completed his five-fer with a helpful paddle from Oliver Morkel (3) to Guthrie Miller at first slip and the smart caught and bowled of Sean Turner (1). Miller himself tempted Hugh Turner (1) and significantly, Jayden Hoare (22) into unrestrained shots; Turner was bowled while Hoare pulled to Will Smith at deep square leg when he was threatening to take the game away from the Knockers.

Paul Morkel (54no) guided Edward Preston-Bell (1no) - who was dropped - with some clear-minded batting as Linden Park put 235-9 on the board. The Knockers batting line-up looked good on paper, so the target held no fear.

Paul Seldon (43) opened with Stuart Seldon (5). The latter didn't look comfortable and a mistimed nurdle saw his stumps deflate off of Preston-Bell's (6-0-31-1) bowling. Tom's Watts (1) and Cobb (0) then warmed up the route to the crease enough to make Sean Turner (3-1-7-2) feel his figures were good enough to make it a brief spell.

Sean Turner didn't leave before playing a part in the champagne moment of the day when the entire Linden Park team bar himself lined up in the slip cordon for Ben Cobb's (69) first ball. Cobb's switching of teams for this encounter was the cause of a dawn-chorus' worth of chirping throughout so it was to his credit that he managed to silence the home side with a purposeful half century. His partnership with Paul Seldon started with the team barely in double figures and ended with a (predicted) run-out with 100 on the board at least.

Scott Landers (1) scooped one to Oliver Morkel of off Hoare (6-0-32-1) to be replaced by Darry (24). Paul Seldon had batted well for his 43 but on this day power overshadowed stroke-play and his long but slow innings came to an end when he holed-out to Oliver Morkel from Tom Corner (6-0-36-1). Will Smith (16) and Darry both had helpful cameos but Morkel (4-0-21-1) and Matt Collins (2-0-10-1) had them respectively.

Guthrie Miller (19no) then swashbuckled into town a little too late to put pressure on the score as he and Paul Cook (3no) saw out the last few overs. Miller smashed 14 from one over but had little time to do anything but fertilise his average. The Knockers competed but that second win still eludes them this summer.
