Match Report

The Knockers arrived at Ide Hill to be greeted by hosts full of confidence after a season with only one defeat. Dan Turner and Lynden Spencer-Allen's opening partnership gave a healthy start for the visitors which was turned to advantage by Matt Watts' unbeaten half century. He and Guy "Mystic Leg" Howe then curtailed the home team's response as victory became manifest.

Captain Edward Darry won the toss and elected to bat. Turner (27) and Spencer-Allen (69) set up the Knockers' innings with a partnership of 75 on a green and challenging track. Turner fell bowled with the run rate reflecting the respect the wicket deserved. Landers (6) also struggled for five overs before being dismissed in the same manner. Tom Jenner (0) also suffered the same fate.

Guy Howe (20) then got the score returning to health with some well timed cover drives as Spencer-Allen continued to pick the bad balls and distribute them around the ground. Howe fell first, bowled by a lifter leaving Alex Elliot (17) to watch Spencer-Allen sky one to bring an end to his important innings.

Matt Watts then wandered out to make things look easy with a breezy half-century that took the shine off of any progress the Ide Hill bowlers had made. Elliot, who had been making hay with the medium pace, found the slow bowlers frustrating enough to miss a swipe at a ball doddering downwards from leg to middle stump for an upheld LBW appeal.

James Baron (6) batted carefree before eliciting a catch at midwicket leaving Darry (8) to fall the victim of a smart direct-hit chasing a tight second run with the imperious Watts.

Paul Cook (seven cakes, three sandwiches and a cup of tea) in possibly his finest tea appearance of the season was well backed by Turner (four cakes, two helpings of sandwiches and a squash).

Matt Watts (6-2-15-2) then sealed his man-of-the-match performance with excellent line and length control. His first wicket seamed from middle to off stump and his second drew a smart catch from Darry at point. Baron (5-0-20-1) took time to adjust to the downhill end before claiming his first Knockers wicket.

First change saw Tom Jenner (4-3-4-1) and Turner (5-2-13-2) step into the fray. Jenner's variation with his slower arm asked plenty of questions before his switch to pace produced ball of the day when it seamed past the unsettled batsman's defence to strike off stump. Turner, bowling off a short run-up, took his first through the gate and his second plumb LBW with a dropped catch in between.

Guy Howe (4-0-18-3) had by then replaced Jenner with only Ide Hill's magic scones proving more tempting on the day than his own magic bowling. Two catches, two drops and a clean bowled continued his sparkling form from the anniversary game. Before Howe completed matters, Edward Darry (2-0-11-1) had also got in on the action, deceiving the batsman with bounce and a rattle of the stumps. Stuart Seldon is reported to have enjoyed his shower.

A fine win for a resurgent Knockers team.
