Match Report

A likely win turned into an unlikely victory and then finally a disappointing defeat as the Knockers fell two short of the Orbillian's total in this 16 over match. Freddie Young dominated the field and Tom Sullivan came close to a glorious individual contribution when fifteen needed from the last over turned into five from two balls.

Following a rain delay and put into field first, Knockers CC opened the bowling with George Lawson (4-1-20-0) and Tom Cobb (4-0-12-0). Lawson found the edge plenty but never the carry as Cobb pinned down the other end to create pressure. First change saw Ken Cowan (3-0-19-1) and Freddie Young (3-0-25-1) unsettle the Orbillian's batting order. Young's LBW appeal led to an attempted run that saw quick thinking Seb Horner run out the opener. Cowan forced a skied shot which Horner snaffled and then Young quickly turned a return ball onto his nearby stumps with the batsman backing up a little too eagerly.

An Orbillian's retirement at 25 ushered in the last two overs from Dan Turner (1-0-6-1) and Seb Horner (1-0-14-0). A powerful cut was well held by Young at cover point of off Turner's bowling and Horner's only over produced near-catches but ultimately boundaries.

Captain Stuart Seldon (4) was dismissed with a fine low catch at midwicket as Tom Cobb (28no) top scored for the visitors with some excellent controlled batting. Ed Marsh (9) replaced Seldon and ran well between the wickets before falling caught behind. Freddie Elliot (7) then stepped in and despite a sublime straight drive, some selective running lowered the run-rate and frustration saw him bowled. Scott Landers (7) joined Cobb as Orbillian's Everson locked down an end. Cobb retired with an all too rare boundary and was soon joined in the pavilion by Landers who was out trying to up the run rate when one kept low. Tom Sullivan (19no) had made his way to the middle in between.

Turner (6) seemed the Knocker's main hope before he fell caught behind to be replaced by Horner (4no). With 24 needed from the last two overs Tom Sullivan ran hard with Horner to bring the deficit down to 15 from the last six balls. Four balls later Sullivan needed just five for victory. A dot ball meant a hefty blow would be necessary on the slow outfield just to get a draw but only two runs were possible as the Knockers came up just short.
