Knockers
201-2
Sissinghurst
103-10
A fine unbeaten century from Paul Seldon dominated proceedings at Sissinghurst, after which 9 man Knockers put in a sterling bowling display to win their first match of the season.
After agreeing to bat first, captain Tom Cobb sent out Paul Seldon (100no) and a handed a Knockers' début to Sam Howard (0). The latter was caught early before posting a score, bringing Tom Cobb (34) to the crease. Despite the faint whiff of the previous night's Jagermeister drifting down from the other end, Seldon batted superbly, at one stage hitting consecutive sixes in an innings where the long boundaries demanded considerable work. Cobb joined in on the action forming a partnership of 82 with Seldon. Cobb's carefree batting helped steady the ship after Sissinghurst's early breakthrough until it proved his downfall when he was caught at mid-off.
Spencer-Allen (43no) replaced Cobb and gradually settled into the game, helping take the visitors past the 200 mark. Only a declaration upon Seldon's ton prevented him posting his own half-century in a 3rd wicket partnership of 118. A great score, but with 9 men the work felt only half-done.
The Knocker's bowling opened with Matt Watts (5-2-6-0) and Ed Marsh (6-1-20-2). Watts bowled with accuracy from the off but couldn't tease a chance out of the opposition. Marsh hit his straps with enough speed to unsettle the Sissinghurst openers and once the first man had fallen bowled, his replacement didn't have enough time to get himself in before he went the same way.
First change saw Freddie Young (10-1-35-2) replace Marsh and then Howard (7-0-19-3) replace Watts. Young took time to find his feet and for a short time the lack of fielders to back him up looked ominous. Howard however took a wicket with his first ball as his slingshot arm nipped the bails. He took further wickets in an equally impressive manner as his quicker ball rose sharply from back of a length to clip the bails twice more. The remaining Sissinghurst opener had by now got his eye in and was depositing the ball in the wide gaps around the field. The Knockers were grateful to his miscued pull off of Young's bowling that went straight to Seldon's belly before he snatched it up.
Nick Williams (5-1-15-3) then took over from Howard and bowled one man before forcing another into a mistimed pull into the onrushing Watts' hands. Following his wicket Young was now brimming with confidence and his second wicket, clean bowled, was just reward. Williams then wrapped things up bowling the eleventh man as the Knockers pulled off a great win in the circumstances.
